LEADERSHIP IN 5698

A
HAPPY
NEW YEAR

One of the particularly striking features of the year's
happenings in the United States was the great number of
national Jewish organizations that chose new leaders. In
some instances the toga of leadership was acquired through
the death of an eminent personality, but in most instances
it won a case of older men stepping out in favor of younger
figures. The most talked of new leader was Dr. Solomon
Goldman of Chicago, whose election to the presidency of
the Zionist Organization of America in succession to Dr.
Stephen S. Wise was hailed as an important precedent be-
cause he is the first non-New Yorker to head the Z. 0. A.
The retirement of Alfred M. Cohen from the presidency of
Bnai Brith and the election of Henry Monsky of Omaha in
his place was another striking change in leadership. Dr.
Wise also retired as national chairman of the United Pales-
tine Appeal, his place being taken by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver.
As a result of the death of Felix M. Warburg, Paul Baerwald
became chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, while
the passing of Harry L. Glucksman elevated Louis Kraft
to the acting executive directorship of the Jewish Welfare
Board. Judge Irving Lehman retired from the presidency
of of New York's Temple Emanu-el, the country's most influ-
ential Jewish congregation, and Lewis Strauss was elected
in his place. Strauss withdrew from the presidency of the
Jewish Agricultural Society, being succeeded by Francis
Rosenbaum. One of the particularly interesting examples
of a veteran leader withdrawing was the case of Samuel
Untermyer, who resigned as President of the Non-Sectarian
Anti-Nazi League. The two leading Jewish women's organi-
zations also observed the year under new leadership, Mrs.
Maurice Goldman succeeding Mrs, Brin as president of the
National Council of Jewish Women, and Mrs. Moses P.
Epstein replacing Mrs. Edward Jacobs as president of Hadas-
soh.

Rabbi Julius Gordon States that

Victims of Oporyissioas

STANDARD HAT WORKS

It has been said again and
again that the greatest sufferer in
the present Nazi rule of horror is
not the Jew, or the trade union-
ist, or the churchman, but the
German people. But Rabbi Julius
Gordon of St. Louis is the first
to present this viewpoint in a
book.
In "Pity the Persecutor," pub-
lished by Richard R. Smith, 120
East 39th St., New York, and
recommended by the Book of the
Month Club, Rabbi Gordon shows
with an abundance of logic that
these restimistbTo for the persecu-
tions in Germany are the real vic-
tims and that they, in the long
run, will suffer for perpetrating
the present horrors.
Not only does Rabbi Gordon
present an impassioned defense
for the Jewish position, but he
makes an excellent plea for dem-
ocracy and expresses the view that
"dictatorship will go down in his-
tory as a short-lived episode,
while liberal-democracy will re-
main a living, history-making
force."
. The larger task at the present
time, he writes, is to make the
world safe for civilization. He
reiterates the Jew's faith in
America and speaking of the con-
fidence that American Jewish
youth have in the American demo-
cratic ideal he declares that "these
Jewish young men and women,
born and reared in an atmos-
phere of freedom, have grown not
only in physical stature but also
in psychic stature. They will not
take persecution lying down. Nor
will they listen to the counsel of
some panic stricken Jews to with-
draw from public life, retire from
active leadership and to declare
a moratorium on Jewish breath-
ing. They will fight for their
rights and, unlike Nazi propagan-
da messengers who work stealthily
and secretly, they will fight openly
and fearlessly."
Quoting Mark Twain, "Against
the assault of laughter nothing
can stand," Rabbi Gordon urges
that we resort to wit and humor
in fighting the Nazi menace. Ile
urges ridicule, satire and the use
of the humorous caricature as a
means of battling despotism and
tyranny and of laughing tyrants
out of existence.
Rabbi Gordon concludes with
hopeful note: "The democracies
of the world must regain their
self-reliance and self-assurance.
They must recapture their lost
faith and confidence in their own
strength and superiority .. . In
the words of one of the ablest
and most loyal sons of Germany,
Thomas Mann: 'Democracy in this
world is as strong as it believes
Fascism is
itself to be.
as strong as democracy allows
it to be.' This conviction of the
inner strength of democracy is the
hope of civilization. When this
conviction becomes a moving and
motivating force within the life
of liberal nations, the signs of the
times will begin to point to a
brighter future for Israel and
mankind. At present, we can only
hope that the renewed onslaughts
of tyranny spell the beginning of
the end—the beginning of the
end, hut, in the words of the
Biblical writer: The end is not
yet.'"
