The Jewish Community Center,
8904 Woodward Ave., has offici-
ally opened its health education
depatrinent and classes are now
in full swing. Edith Muskin and
Sam Levy, health education di-
rectors for women and men. re-
spectively, have announced that
a wide variety of health activities
are being planned for the corn-
ing year.
In tpe women's health depart-
ment, classes in modern dance,
calisthenics, volley ball. badmin-
ton and fencing are being or-
ganized. There will also be a
special class in swimming for
women held weekly. A novelty
this year will be the organiza-
tion of a girls' basketball league
which will help to stimulate this
activity among, the women. In
addition to this a class in social
dancing has been planned where
the current dance styles will be
taught. For the younger children,
classes in rhythmic and tap danc-
ing as well as gym have been
or"anized.
The Women's Health Club is
a special grouping for those wo-
men who prefer their gym ac-
tivity in the morning. Classes are
held on Tuesday and Thursday
at 10 a. m. Calisthenics and bad-
minton are the two favorites in
this group.
The Mens' Health Department
features two four-wall handball
courts which are considered
among the finest in the city. Spe-
cial exercises in boxing, wrest-
ling, volley ball, swimming and
badminton are available to mem-
bers of this department. The
social dancing class is also open
to those men who are interested
in learning the old and new dance
stens.

Emanuel Mitzvah
School to Begin
Sessions Oct. 12'
Under the direction of Rabbi
Max J. %Vohlgelernter, Congre-
gation Beth Tefilo Emanuel will
continue to develop a unique ex-
periment in Jewish religious edu-
cation which was launched last
February and operated success-
fully until the end of June. Ses-
sions for the new Hebrew year,
5699, will begin Sunday, Oct.
2, at 9 a. in., when all groups
meet at the Emanuel chapel,
Taylor and Woodrow Wilson, for
the daily morning service, fol-
lowed by a joint breakfast for
faculty and students at the ves-
try and several classes in Bible.
Jewish history and religious law.
The entire program concludes at
12 noon, but additional activi-
ties and projects are sponsored
during the week. Boys who have
already become Bar Mitzvah or
are about to enter Jewish reli-
gious maturity, and girls who
have reached the age of 12, are
admitted.
The "Mitzvah School" has as
its objective the preparation of
the adolescent boy and girl (age
12 to 16) for active participa-
tion in Jewish religious life. Its
program is adjusted to the needs
of such students as have had
only a very elementary training
in Hebrew previously. As the
work continues, it is planned to
include special high school clas-
ses for pupils who received a
more complete training in earlier
years.
Parents will be required to ac-
company their children at regis-
tration Sunday morning or to
communicate with Rabbi Wohl
gelernter at his synagogue study,
Trinity 1-2934.

the Book of Merits. What greater,
more shining merits can be pre-
sented to the Lord than cacti an
outpouring of a soul delivered
from the pangs and persecutions
in a country transformed into a
human "tofeth," underworld?
What do thousands of formal,
gold-edged New Year cards with
the artificial engravings of good
will toward our fellow men, sig-
nify in comparison to one such
dispatched affidavit which saves
and rescues a Jewish soul?
Paraphrasing an ancient Mid-
rash, I might state, "God says to
the children of Israel: Your Keth-
ivah and Chashno Tovah depends
on My mercy, your brother's es-
cape to security, peace and human
dignity might depend on your
writing and signature, grant to
your brother in divine-like love
what he requests from you and I
shall grant what you pray for:
Life, Loy and happiness: Kethi-
vah V'chasirno Tovah."
The third annual donor lunch-
eon of the Bnai David Sisterhood
is planned for Tuesday afternoon,
Dec. 13, at the Fort Wayne Hotel.
Mrs. Philip Kramer has been ap-
pointed chairman, with Mrs. Roy
Chatlin, assisting. There will be
a souvenir booklet, Mrs. Leon Sla-
yin being chairman, with Mrs.
Dan Otis and Sirs. Sam Kane as
co-chairmen. Those desiring to
earn their admissions can get in
touch with Mrs. Philip Kramer,
Northlawn 5613.
Morning devotions will begin
at 7. Rabbi Moses Fischer, spir-
itual leader of the congregation,
will deliver sermons both days.
Monday's message is titled "New
Year's Greetings and the New
Year Message of the Shofar to
the Jewry Today." Tuesday's
discourse will be on the subject,
"Great and Vital Lessons in a
Single Ilebrew Word."
On Shabos Shuvoh, Oct. 1,
Rabbi Fischer will speak on,
"Heaven and Earth. Life and
Death. Good and Evil."'
