to Meet Sept. 28

The Women's branch of the
American League for Peace and
Democracy will give a member-
ship tea, Wednesday, Sept. 28, at
2 p. m., at the Scarab Club, John
R and Farsworth. • •
An invitation to attend is ex-
tended to all women who are
staunch believers in peace and
democracy. This affair will mark
the beginning of the fall member-
ship drive of the organization,
which is non-sectarian and non-
political, and welcomes women
from all groups.
A string quartet, composed of
well known Detroit musicians,
dramatic monologues by two tal-
ented members of the Contem-
porary Theater, Allen Naylor and
George Parker, and an enlighten-
ing address by a well known De-
troit speaker, Albert E. Kahn,
will comprise a diversified pro-
gram for the day.
Refreshments will follow the
meeting. There is no admission
charge.

On Monday morning, the final
day of Rosh Hashonah, at 10:45
a. m., Rabbi Joshua Sperka will
occupy the pulpit of Congregation
Bnai David, Elmhurst and 14th,
and will deliver a sermon on sub-
ject "Experiments In Living."
Between Mincha and Maariv Rab-
bi Sperka will speak in Yiddish
on the subject "Life In a Crisis."
Tuesday morning, the second
day of Rosh Hashonah, the sub-
ject of his sermon will be "Dare
We Look Ahead."
Cantor Abraham Singer, with a
large choir, under the direction
of Nathan Turbow, will officiate.

To the supplementary service
at Congregation Bnai David, Elm-
burst and 14th, young people, and
those non-members who cannot be
accommodated in the main audito-
rium of the synagogue, are espe-
cially invited.
The services have been planned
to give meaning and inspiration
to those who do not understand
the Hebrew prayers. The chief
prayers will be translated and in-
terpreted. Rabbi .1. S. Sperka will
preach at these services.

It has been a pleasant year in which we have

briefly. Morris Shatzen gave an
account of the first drive for the
American Committee Appeal in
Detroit, conducted in 1936, of
which he was treasurer and
which resulted in the solicitation
of more than 314,000.
A number of Detroit syna-
gogues have already indicated
their intention of appealing to
their worshippers during the High
Holy Days. Other congregations
are being contacted for that pur-
pose.

Holy Day Appeal

NEW YORK.—A special ap-
peal on behalf of aid to Polish
Jews has been issued by the
Union of Orthodox Rabbis of
the United States and Canada
from its national office at 673
Broadway, urging American Jews
to observe a special "Polish-
Jewish Aid Day" during the ap-
proaching High Holy Days.
The appeal, signed by Rabbi
Joseph Kanovitz, president of the
Orthodox Rabbis, and Rabbi Ju-
dah-Leib Seltzer, secretary of the
organization. urges all Jews on
this continent to aid Polish Jew-
ry through the American Com-
mittee Appeal for the Jews in
Poland.
The latter committee,
with offices at 226 W. 34th St.,
is headed by Samuel Nntermyer,
honorary chairmman. Benjamin
'inter is chairman of the com-
mittee and Zelig Ty-el is execu-
tive director. More than 1250.-
has been sent to Poland for
direct aid and constructive relief
