Europe, so that thousands of Jewish
lives could be saved, particularly
among the children, by the summer
colonies. and medical and sanitary
institutions maintained by the Joint
Distribution Committee. Rehabilita-
tive work includes that of culture
training, educational and vocational
training of Jewish youths and adults
in Eastern Europe. Thousands of
families such as the one pictured
above depend solely upon the J.D.0
for their daily food.
Jewish Attitude Toward
Divorce
Although the Jew regards mar-
riage as a divine institution and
hence one to be maintained
throughout the husband's and
wife's life, he favors the discon-
tinuance of the married state un-
der certain well defined and rea-
sonable conditions. husbands and
wives may sue for divorce on the
ground of adultery, immorality or
loathesome disease. In addition to
these reasons a wife may sue for
divorce on account of non-support
or desertion. However, no divorce
can take place according to the
Jewish law except upon common
agreement of husband and wife.
While divorce is permitted, Jews,
as a rule, seek to avoid a legal
separation between husband and
wife. The shame attached to di-
vorce may be recognized in the
well-known. rgbbinical sentiments,
"he who divorces his wife is hated
before the Lord;" "God's altar
sheds tears for him who divorces
the wife of his youth."
Why Jews Do Not Promote
Missionary Work
At one time the Jews were ar-
dent missionaries. Toward the end
of the second pre-Christian cen-
tury the missionary spirit devel-
oped with enthusiasm often fana-
tical among the Jews. The Mac-
cabean rulers of Judea compelled
the non-Jewish elements of Pales-
tine to adopt Judaism. The rabbi-
nical teachers, on the other hand,
attempted to win proselytes
through religious conviction. Many
converts were niade and conspicu-
ous among them were the women,
often of royal station, including
the Roman empress l'oppea, wife
of Nero, and Queen Helen of Adi-
abene. In Damascus it was said
most of the women had become
converts to Judaism.
With the rise of Christianity,
missionary activities were forbid-
den and the whole movement col-
lapsed and, with but few excep-
tions, was never regenerated.
However, the more fundamental
explanation of why Jews do not
proselytize lies in the development
of the prophetic ideal in Judaism.
