THE PROPHET

I.

Saginaw. Mich.

James D. Ferguson

Prof. Samuel S. Cohon in
"What We Jews Believe" states:
"The idea of a personal Messiah
as world savior appeared in Israel
like a rainbow on a cloud-laden
sky, displaying a wealth of har-
mony and color. In tragic serious-
ness men devoted themselves to
searching Scripture for hints of
the right time of the promised ad-
vent of the Redeemer. This belief
partly served a good purpose of
endowing the despondent people, in
the course of many dark centuries,
with hope and courage."
A series of men, says Prof.
Cohon, did appear, each claiming
to be the God-sent Messiah. Some
of them were victims of their own
delusions, while others were plain
imposters, who exploited the cre-
dulity and ignorance of the masses.
Their appearances created fever-
ish excitement among the people,
and were generally followed by
the saddening disappointment and
exhaustion that grow out of dis-
illusionment. Most of them sought
to re-establish the Jewish kingdom
in 'Palestine and to deliver man-
kind from wickedness and error.
The means which they employed
were performance of miracles,
long fasts and other ascetic rites,
and religious reforms,

valesce properly in sanatoria and
hospitals which the Joint Distribution
Committee sustains.

Yearly 35.000 tubercular, under-
nourished. and anemic children are
sent to these J U.C. summer colonies
to recuperate. Tens of thousands of
children are provided with education
in special schools, both religious and
secular. Health campaigns by the
J DC have helped wipe out lavua
and typhus in Eastern Europe. The
American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee, as the major organization
of its type in America, has expended
approximately $27,000,000 for re-
habilitative work in behalf of Jews in

A PHONE CALL STARTS A TRUCK TO YOU

Portions of the Bible were
translated at a very early date.
Caedmon of Whitley set some of
the stories of the Bible into poe-
tic paraphrase as early as 670
A, D. A little later, about 700
A. D., Aldhelm, bishop of Sher-
borne, prepared a version of the
Psalms partly in prose and partly
in verse.
The best-known Christian schol-
ar of that age was Bede, a monk
of Yarrow-on-the-Tyne, who died
in 735 A. D. The last book of
his version of the i ltible to be
translated was the Fourth Gos-
rel. King Aldred and Aelfrie of'
Petersborough are among trans-
lators of portions of the Bible
into the speech then spoken in
Britain before 1000 A. D. To
these in the 14th century must be
added the translation of John
Wyclif.
After the invention of printing
(1455) James Tyndale published
two editions of the New Testa-
ment. Miles Coverdale published
the first complete Bible in the
English janguage about 1535. It

was printed on the continent. but
seems to have won the favor of
the authorities. including the
King, Thomas Cromwell and Bis-
hop Crammer.
