justifiably that this book was writ-
ten not for the specialist but for
the average literate American.
Increasing the value of this
work is the fact that the problems
and developments of this country
are made understandable by al
series of charts' and pictorial sta-
iistics which were prepared by ,
Mr. Hacker's collaborators.
This splendid volume gives an
outline of the history of the United
States in economic terms. It be-
gins with an outline of the feudal
world, outlines the destruction of I
feudalism by capitalism, describes
graphically the mediaeval trade
routes, then leads up to the econo-
mic development and growth of
this country beginning with the
18th century Virginia State, its
slave and plantation systems and
the colonial economy of this coun-
try.
Of particular interest, especially
in view of the discussion of the
Constitution and the Constitution's
sesquicentennial, is an outline of
clashing economic interests that
were involved in the vote on the
adoption of the Constitution. In
Massachusetts, for instance, dele-
gates from the mercantile seaboard
voted for adoption, small farmers
and large speculative interests
voted against it,
The chapters dealing with im-
migration and emigration have
particular value in the face of
present-day conflicting statements
regarding aliens. In its discussion
of the subject, the author, after
describing the high and low tides
of immigration from 1820 to 1936„
states: "Another great chapter of
American history was closed." This
statement—gloomy for those who
see an increase in prosperity in
increased immigration, and espe-
cially for those who wish to see
this country perpetuated as a ha-
ven of refuge for the downtrodden
—is based on the comparative fig-
ures which show that the high tide
of immigration dropped to 23,000
admitted in 1933 and 30,000 in
1936. In 1933, 80,081 left the coun-
try, showing a loss as compared
with newcomers of 57,013. In 1936
those who emigrated numbered
35,817, showing a net gain for the
year of only 512.
The graphs illustrating the
chapters on immigration and emig-
ration increase the value of these
chapters. Similarly the charts and
graphs throughout the book help
in the formation of a marvelous
history.

in its regular paper-bound format
and a demand immediately arose
for an edition bound in more per-
manent form. The new Random
