Helping the Culture of Israel to Take Root
in the Lires of Jewish Children
Private Property
There is nothing in Jewish his-
tory to indicate that the teachings
of Judaism, as accepted by the
masses of the Jewish people, de-
nied at any time the right to prop-
erty. A saying of the ancient liter-
ature tells us, "He who saith
'what is mine is mine, and what
is thine is mine' is a wicked per-
son." A rabbi nearly 2000 years
ago said: "Thy neighbor's property
shall be as precious to thee as
thine own." (Aboth 2:17),
Private property was always
regarded as a trust from God to be
secured by industry and initiative
and to be used for the benefit of
all. All through the Old Testament
days, the period of the Talmud,
and the Middle Ages, wherever
the Jews lived, an individual's right
to property was recognized and ac-
knowledged to this degree, that
laws and institutions were devel-
oped for trade and industry, speci-
fic laws were devised for transfer
of property through inheritance,
provisions were made for the
equitable relationship bet ween
landlord and tenant, between em-
ployer and employee, in order that
justice might be done in every
case.
Now happiness consists in ac-
tivity: such is the constitution of
our nature: it is a running stream,
and not a stagnant pool.

One of the most important projects
of the American Jewish Joint Distri-
bution Committee is that one foster-
ing Ilebrew cultural education among
Jewish children and youths. Depicted
herewith is a scene in a talmud torah,
one of the hundreds that receive
grants of funds from the J.D.C.
§ince 1921. the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee,
through its Committee on Cultural
Affairs, of which Dr. Cyrus Adler,
president of Dropme College for
Hebrew and Cognate Learning is
chairman, has expended $4,000,000 in
support of institutions of ilebrew and
religious learning in Poland, Austria,
Hungary. Roumania, Latvia, Lithu-
ania, Bessarabia, Sub-Carpathia and
other East European territories. In
1935 alone. through Dr. Adler's cul-
tural committee, the J.D.C. expended
5100,000 for the talmud torahs,
Yeshivoths and Tarbut schools of
Eastern Europe.
Due to the poor economic condition
of Jews and the growing restrictions
against large attendance of Jewish
students in the elementary and high
schools of these various countries,
there is an increasing number of Jew-
ish youths who have no other means
of obtaining an education except
through these religious schools. For
this reason greater grants to these
schools to enable them to continue tc
care for their increasing student load,
must be made this year
These same conditions make it alsc
imperative that Jewish schools of the
secular type be increased in these
countries. To continue this type of
education which in the past has made
possible the education of tens d
