Henry Ford's Birthday

Henry Ford is the hero of the day. Not
only the entire nation, but the entire world
is congratulating him today on his 75th
birthday and in reviewing his life which
is being presented as an example to the
young. He is the king of industry and the
philosopher of modern industrial life. He
is the creator of a new way of life and his
simplicity, in spite of his wealth, is being
held up as a model for all who would learn
from the great men of our time.
There is one chapter in his life that will
not be generally referred to at this time.
It is the chapter which has to do with his
explorations of Jewish activities. It is a
sad period in his career, and it marked the
writing of a very sad chapter in Jewish
history.
Under different circumstances this
would hardly be the time to refer back
to the years 1920 to 1927 when a battle
raged between Henry .Ford's misinformed
advisers and the Jewish defenders of the
truth about us and our activities. But it
so happens that just now we are experi-
encing a recrudescence of anti-Semitism of
the type which characterized the now ex-
tinct Dearborn Independent. Not only are
the monster forgeries called the Protocols
of the Elders of Zion being reprinted and
widely circulated, but Henry Ford's state-
ments of February 1921 are being quoted
again to substantiate the claims of anti-
Semites. His apology of 1927, excerpts
from which we reprinted last week, is be-
ing completely ignored, but his earlier
views are reviewed. Thus, an entire people
is being libelled again, in spite of the fact
that as late as January 1937, through his
secretary, E. G. Liebold, Mr. Ford again
repudiated the Protocols and denied hav-
ing anything to do with their circulation.
The Jewish people is now engaged in
a difficult task of defending its position
by means of propagating the truth and
nailing the lies that are being spread
against us. We plead for and invite the
co-operation of all non-Jews in this task
which has become as important an effort
for the Jews in free America as it is for
our fellow-men in lands of oppression. We
again invite the co-operation of Mr. Ford
in this sacred work. In greeting him on the
occasion of his birthday we wish to ex-
press the hope that he will personally in-
tercede to put a stop to the use of his name
by anti-Semites who are appending his
early and now disavowed statements to
the Protocols. As the idol of millions of
Americans, words attributed to Mr. Ford
may easily be used as rallying cries to
arouse hatred and race prejudice. We ask
him to step in and to condemn the lie.
Jews have tried to reason with anti-
Semites and to tell them that the state-
ments of Henry Ford of 1921 are no longer
valid; that they have been nullified by the
apology of 1927. But our word is weak
compared with the effect that Mr. Ford's
own statement would have on the dissem-
inators of hatred against us. We are in
position to supply Mr. Ford with a list
of organizations and individuals who are
using his name and quotations from his
writings as part of their dastardly work.
A word from Mr. Ford will help to put
a stop to this horrible business. We ask
him at this time to take a hand personally
in this matter and to complete the task
he began on June 30, 1937, in his state-
ment to the late Louis Marshall, of dis-
crediting the malicious libels contained in
the Protocols. We know of no more sacred
work that Mr. Ford could enlist in at the
present time than that of co-operating in
dealing a death blow to religious and ra-
cial bigotry.

Greetings, American Israelite

Last Friday, the American Israelite ob-
served the 85th anniversary of its found-
ing by Rabbi Isaac M. Wise. Although
85 years is but a short span of life in the
long history of Jewish participation in
the building of this great republic, in
terms of the history of our press in this
country it is a long life. The American
Israelite is the oldest Anglo-Jewish peri-
odical in America. It antedates the forma-
tion of any Yiddish newspaper. For a
long time it served as a national Jewish
organ, until the growth of the Jewish
communities brought to life the numerous
Jewish newspapers which today serve
American Jewry.
During the past few years the Ameri-
can Israelite has been showing progress
and improvement over the preceding
years. Its editor and publisher have dis-
played a keen desire to serve the Jew-
ish community and to set ever higher pro-
fessional standards. Its sincerity deserves
for it the support of its Jewish readers.
We join with the Cincinnatians, and
with the journalistic profession through-
out the country in congratulating the
American Israelite on its 85th anniver-

eary.

ROOSEVELT MAY BE
AT J. W. V. CONCLAVE

Julius Streicher, bigoted pervert whose
great ambition it is to wipe the Jewish
people off the face of the earth, has shown
another example of his insanity this week
by describing synagogues as "bandits'
caves" and by calling for the destruction
of all Jewish houses of worship in Ger-
many. Referring to the Nuremberg syna-
gogue as a blot "on that pearl of German
cities, the meeting place of the National
Socialist party congress," Streicher char-
acterizes synagogues in his Stuermer as
"prayer houses for the Jewish criminal
world clique."
Streicher's insane outburst appears to
pave the way for putting into effect a gen-
eral program for the razing of syna-
gogues. The Munich synagogue has al-
ready been razed. It is reported that the
Berlin synagogue is about to be destroyed
in line with plans for the architectural re-
construction of the city. Now comes
Streicher's libel on the synagogue of Nu-
remberg.
The great English theologian and stu-
dent of rabbinic literature, Rev. R. Trav-
ers Herford, also had an opinion of the
synagogue. This great scholar said:

lish couple at a tea on the House of Com-
mons Terrace. The conservative lady re-
marked: "It is terrible the number of Jews
one sees nowadays. The country is overrun
with them. All coming from the conti-
nent." Miss Wilkinson pointed out to the
lady and to her husband that altogether
there are less than 5,000 refugees in Eng-
land and that many of them are non-Jews.
Whereupon the lady said: "Oh, yes, but
the, point is that before there was all this
fuss in the papers one never noticed them,
any more than one counted people with
red hair. But now you can't help making
a mental note whenever you see a Jewish
face." Miss Wilkinson concluded her story
by pointing out: "It is in this power of
creating atmosphere that the danger of
anti-Semitic propaganda lies."
That is our great trouble: that we are
in the headlines today. We are in the news
against our wishes, but we are there, and
every time we appear in the headlines it
spells trouble for us. It is no wonder that
Jews feel jittery. But the panic is not of
our own making.

Galgenhumor

The I. R. A. Bulletin published by the
American Committee of the International
Relief Association, is replete with Galgen-
humor. There is a story, for instance, un-
der the heading "Nazi Logic," which is
very subtle in its explanation of anti-
Semitism :

The little daughter of ■ Nazi ;mks father:
"Why are the Jews so tormented and mal-
treated?" "All Jews are enemies of the Ger-
man people and hate on." "Why do the Jews
kite us so much?" "Because we torment and
maltreat them."

Another witticism explains how many
Nazis there are in Germany:

Only people who are well acquainted with
life under fascism will sufficiently a ppreciate
the following witticism whispered in Berlin:
"There are many Nazis. You can see •
crowd of thousands of them. You will find
groups of • hundred. But you can never find
• single Nadi"

Humor is mingled with tragedy in the
revelations published by the I. R. A. Bulle-
tin. There is, for instance, the following
description of . the arrest of a former trade
union leader:

In Tilannheire, the former Social Democrat
municipal councilor and trade union secretary,
Trumpfheller, has been arrested and sent to
the Dachau concentration camp. During ■
conversa tion at • restaurant, Trumpfheller has
dangerous
declared that Jews no longer ■
in Germany because they have been removed
from all leading positions. An unidentified
Gestapo agent recommended him to read the
"Stuermer." Trumpfheller answered: "My
dear friend, this paper is simply so idiotic
that I am unable to read it." Trumpfheller
was arrested shortly afterward.

The International Relief Association
carries on an important task of under-
ground work against Nazism in Germany
and the former Austria, and provides re-
lief whenever possible to the politically
oppressed and to political refugees. Miss
Freda Kirchwey is secretary of the Ameri-
can committee whose offices are in Room
310, 20 Vesey St., New York. This move-
ment is deserving of all the support that

A Brilliant Exemplar of Good Living

The Detroit News was among the newspapers
throughout the country in whose editorial tributes
to the late Justice Cardozo references was made
to his Jewishness and to the fact that his contribu-
tions to American life ought to serve to refute the
stupid race prejudices that are rampant today.
The Catholic Commonweal carried one of the most
emphatic references to Justice Cardozo's Jewish-
ness. In its issue of July 22 it had the following
to say:

This, too, proves the important point that only
Jews occasionally become apologetic about their
Jewishness: that Christians respect those Jews
who affirm their origin and accept their heritage
with dignity and pride.

Palestine Pavilion at World Fair

The laying of the cornerstone on May 19 for the
Palestine Pavilion at the New York World's Fair of
1939 is an historic event for Jewry. It represents
not merely an effort to represent Jews as a con-
structive element in world affairs and in the arts,
sciences, literature, commerce and industry, but it
seeks to accomplish this task by exhibiting Jewish
efforts from the one place on the globe where Jews
have in recent years had the opportunity of build-
ing as a national unit and as free men and women:
from Palestine.
An imposing committee is engaged in prepare-
tions for the functioning of the Palestine Pavilion,
and the fact that Meyer Weisgal, whose genius was
responsible for Jewish Day in Chicago and for
the great production "The Eternal Road," which
was staged in New York and hailed by America's
leading critics, is assurance that the undertaking
will meet with the progress and success that it
merits.

aratistic." "The spirit of faith,"
he said, "must fight against the
spirit of separatism and against
the spirit of exaggerated nation-
alism, which are detestable, and
which just because they are not
Christian, end by not being even
human." He also made a refer-
ence interpreted as an attack on
Fascism when he said that the
basis of co-operation between laity
and clergy underlying the organ-
izations of Catholic Action is a
conception that is "greater than
wonderful. And is one of true
democracy in opposition to all the
foolishness and blasphemy that
is uttered nowadays with such
facile levity on this subject."
