gravity of the situation there
Before returning to this country

CARDOZOISMS
Did you know that Justice
Benjamin N. Cardozo never got
a law degree? . . . But he won
his M. A. in political science with
a...65-page thesis on Communism,
his conclusion being that the
movement was impracticable .. .
That was away back in 1898 .
Ile loved to stay up all night
reading, his favorite books being
the works of Santayana, Hal-
dane and Bertram Russell. When
he felt in the mood for light
reading he turned to Chinese
Philosophy . . . And he was also
familiar with the writings of
Spinoza, Akiba and Maimonides
. . . His Washington apartment
was crammed with books that
publishers and authors had sent
him from all parts of the world
. . . Cardozo was 60 before he
saw his first movie . . . lie knew
so little about the films that once,
during a trial, he asked from the
bench: "What is a Paramount
picture?" . . . Nor could he un-
derstand why movies don't play
return engagements, as legiti-
mate shows do . . . The first
movie he ever saw was an ani-
mated cartoon, which impressed
him so much that later, when the
"Three Little Pigs" came out,
and he missed the first showing,
he hunted around for three years
until he finally found a theater
where this film was playing . . .
His memory was prodigious . . .
He could cite volume and page
of thousands of cases, and often
named the exact page of a refer-
ence in a volume decades old
.. One of his greatest talents
was his ability to read in one-
tenth the normal time . . . Get-
ting up at 4 A. M. to write an
opinion was nothing unusual for

correspondence, and, like his col-

Among other things Mr. Blon-
dy advocates the revision of the
sales tax.
"I believe that the
present method of sales tax col-

should be amended to help the
business man eliminate excessive
bookkeeping. Mr. Blondy be-
lieves that the use of stamps for
sales tax such as is used in Ohio

a solution to the problem."
Mr. Blondy is endorsed by
