Appearance in the July 18 issue of Social Jus-
tice of the first of a series of articles on the
Protocols of the Elders of Zion, over the signa-
ture of Father Coughlin, inspired a meeting with
the famous priest and radio broadcaster as a
result of which he made several important state-
:nents to his Jewish interviewers.
On Tuesday afternoon the editor of The De-
troit Jewish Chronicle sent the following telegram
to Father Coughlin:
Protocols and now coming true in Russia and in
this country under the New Deal. I repeat that
I do not care anything at all about authenticity
of the Protocols but am concerned only with the
contents."
His interviewers then pointed out to him that
the Protocols had been proven forgeries; that
Henry Ford apologized for publishing them in his
famous statement on June 30, 1927; that their
authorship has been traced to a Frenchman, Joly,
who wrote them in 1864 to disparage Napoleon
III, and that the Russian Sergei Nilus, at the insti-
gation of the Russian Secret Police, plagiarized
them to suit later purposes against the Jews in
1897. He was told, further. that the coupling
of the Jewish name with the Protocols has brought
immeasurable harm to the Jewish people. This
writer pointed out that no matter what qualifying
statements are appended to the Protocols. their
mere appearance in print is interpreted by the
average person as additional proof that Jews are
engaged in a plot; that mere mention of the
Protocols always proves hurtful to the Jewish
people.

Detroit is being flooded with letters from Ger-
man Jews, especially those living in what was
Austria a short time ago, pleading to be taken out
of there and to be given an opportunity to settle in
this country.
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle appeals to those
who are moved by such sympathetic interest to sign
affidavits for men and women desiring to come
here, at the same time indicating their readiness
to help these people until they are settled here and
provided for. We hope that there will be a large
number of people with means who will assume such
responsibility in the present crisis.
Those desiring to sign affidavits and to join in
this important errand of mercy are asked to com-
municate at once with The Detroit Jewish Chron-
icle and arrangements will then be made for them
to render this great service in the present hour of
need.

ROME. (WNS)—A broad hint
to Italian officials everywhere to
embark on a program of anti-
Jewish discrimination was given
by the Fogli di Disposizioni, the
paper in which the secretary gen-
eral of the Fascist Party trans-
mits his orders and instructions
to provincial secretaries, when it
published the following brief
note: "I call the attention of
Federal secretaries to the con-
clusions reached by a group of
Italian professors in Italian uni-
versities concerning the position
of Fascism toward the problems
of race." This hint is virtually
tantamount to an order and is
believed to be paving the way
nationwide anti-Jewish
for a
drive. Already foreigners arriv-
ing at the Italian frontiers re-
port they are being asked to
state their religion. Jews are
being turned back, especially if
they are German or Austrian
refugees.
Meanwhile, Pope Pius, speak-
ing to a number of French nuns,
voiced sharp criticism of "exag-
gerated forms of nationalism" in
an unusually vigorous speech
generally interpreted as an at-
tack on the newly announced
policy of race purity which de-
clares the Italians are Aryans
and rules Jews out of the Italian
race. Without referring to the
race dogma, the Pope said "this
very day we have received some-
thing very grave. It has now
reached the point of true apos-
tasy. It is no longer a question
of ideas being right or wrong.
It is the entire spirit of the dec-
al a trine which is contrary to the
faith of Christ. The world is
afflicted by exaggerated forms of
nationalism which we have al-
ready deplored as erroneous and
dangerous on previous occasions.
This extreme nationalism impedes
the spirit to live healthily and
raises barriers between peoples,
contrary not only to the law of
our good Lord but to the faith
itself."
II Tevere, one of the news-
papers responsible for the anti-
Jewish press campaign climaxed
by the publication of the race
code, declares that the Jews
ought to agree with Italian racial
theories because they have them-
selves always sought to keep
their blood free of intermixture.
Moving to carry into effect the
10-point race doctrine published
last week by the ministry of pop-
ular culture, the ministry of in-
terior announced the establish-
ment of a special office for de-
mography and race protection.
The new office is expected to deal
with questions arising from the
assertion in the pedal program
that Jews do not belong to the
Italian race.
