AT THE POWATAN

Haskell, suave young deceiver
appearing now at the Powatan,
says that most of his successful
magic deceptions are tricks that
have been known and practiced
for hundreds of years.
He has thought up a new one
with a deck of cards that mysti-
fies the best poker players in the
audience. He throws a deck
against the ceiling, having previ-
ously had someone in the audi-
ence name one card.' When the
deck falls from the ceiling, the
called card is left sticking there.
How? Haskell won't tell.
Also starring in the show is
petite and pretty Bernice Parks ,
song star from the Club Versailles
in New York. Maybelle Van's
A dorables dance delightfully and
Paul Neighbor's music for danc-
ing is heard between shows.

Of all the messages and letters
of congratulations received by
Henry Monsky, new Bnai Brith
prexy, the one he treasures most
is a telegram in Yiddish from his
aged mother.

"his hands are cushions that come
alive on the keyboard, rippling like
silk, sensitized to the feel of tone.
Tackling the rarely played First
Concerto of Beethoven, he explored
its loveliness, its perversity, its
eccentricity and its complexity
with an inquisitive musical mind
as well as fluent technique. The
result was not merely a remark-
