for themselves an economic foot-
hold in the countries of oppres-
sion.
The Joint Distribution Commit-
tee is called upon to supplement
the funds needed for such activi-
ties where the emergency is most
acute; to spur on and help the
Jewish communities to maintain
or create the institutions which
they, themselves, deem most in-
dispensable in the face of the
crisis. It becomes ever clearer
that the task before the Jews of
America through the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee in Europe
and the Americas, and through
the United Palestine Appeal, for
the upbuilding of the colony in
that country, is a gigantic one.
The difficulty of estimating
what the future may bring has
been greatly increased by the
growing insecurity of Jewish life
overseas. The increasing severity
of anti-Semitism; of Nazi meas-
urea in Germany, and now in
Austria; the threats to the very
existence of 900,000 Jews in Ru-
mania through the access of an
outspokenly anti-Jewish govern-
ment; the continued crisis in the
lives of the three million Jews in
Poland; the precarious conditions
of the refugees in many addi-
tional countries, and new difficul-
ties in lands of settlement, have
all darkened the picture for 1938.
In sonic measure we can alle-
viate the suffering; we can light-
en the burden. For the great
work of 52 organizations—local,
national and overseas—the Allied
Jewish Campaign is about to con-
duct a fund-raising effort to meet
their needs and to preserve our
own dignity and self-respect. We
cannot afford to give less than in
vast years; indeed, the Jews of
Detroit must give—and I am con-
fident will give—in sums greater
by at least the amount that the
need is increased.

never will be. When a Jew is
persecuted anywhere we do not
content ourselves with throwing
him a pittance. We fight for his
rights. We demand justice. We
know that tomorrow the plague of
prejudice may strike us here on
our own shores, and in order to be
consistent in our Jewishness, in
order to be truly democratic in
the American sense of the term,
we must help our humiliated
brothers. Rabbi I.azaron not only
warns against such a harmless but
humanitarian axis, but would lead
us to believe that anyone who ap-
proves of it is disloyal. Therein
lies his harmful approach to the
entire question.
•
"This Is No Less Than Slander"
Rabbi Lazaron gets his due
share of criticism from a fellow
townsman—Rabbi Edward L. Is-
rael—who condemns his book in
an article, "On Marshy Ground,"
in the current issue of the Jewish
Frontier. Every Jew who is con-
cerned in defending our right to
kinship with Jews throughout the
world should read this criticism
in which Rabbi Israel states: "Rab-
bi Lazaron has harmed his people
greatly by making it apppear that
certain ideas held by the great
mass of Jews are disloyal to
America. This is no less than a
slander." This is the view we
propounded in our first comment
on Rabbi Lazaron's book. We
quoted non-Jewish opinion to
show, in contradiction with Rabbi
Lazaron, that the true American
way is to encourage all cultural
aspects in the building of our
democracy. We quoted an emi-
nent non-Jewish writer, R. 11.
Markham, who pointed out that
in spite of differing customs and
practices among various elements
in our population, "we are a
brotherhood and can so help one
another that we will all be strong,
and freedom shall not perish from
the earth." Rabbi Lazaron's way
would be to reject such an admix-
ture that nevertheless makes for
brotherhood. In the light of
American traditions he betrays
the spirit of the land which is
today the major bulwark against
totalitarianism.
It appears to us that Rabbi Laz-
aron has lost his appeal, in spite
of the white-washing editorial by
Rabbi Isserman.
