Why Jews Wear Praying
Shawl in the Synagogue
The use of the praying shawl
or Talith, as it is known in Ito.
brew, is in obedience to the follow-
ing Biblical injunction:
"Speak unto the children of Is-
rael and bid them that they make
them fringes in the border of their
garments, throughout their gen-
erations, and that they put upon
the fringe of their borders a cord
of blue; and it shall be unto you
for a fringe that you may look
upon it and remember all the corn-
mandments of the Lord and do
them; and that ye seek not after
your own heart and your own eyes
after which ye go astray." (Numb.
15:38, 39).
Another passage supposed to
enjoin the use of the Talith is:
"Thou shalt make for thyself
fringes upon the four corners, of
your garments with which thou
coverest thyself." (Deut. 22:12).

The six-cornered star generally
seen on the faced.? of the Jewish
synagogue is variously known as
the Star of David, David's Shield
and the Mogen David. This Hexi-
gram formed by the combination
of two equi-lateral triangles is
universally recognied as a sym-
bol of Judaism. The star with
the word "Zion" in the cen-
ter is the symbol of the World
Zionist movement; it was also
adopted in 1873 as the symbol of
the Jewish Publication Society of
America.
Many believe that the Mogen
David, like the Mezuzah, is a sym-
bol of the protective powers ex-
ercised by God in behalf of the
Jew. Thus the star appears over
the door of the synagogue as
does the Mezuzah over the door of
Jewish homes. Not by any of its
names was the star mentioned in
Biblical or Talmudic literature,
this because of the Jewish view
of God which permits no images
of Him and was and still is op-
posed to the acceptance of any
symbols.
Its use was first noted in a
Jewish tombstone at Tarentum,
southern Italy, which may date
as early as the Third Century of
the common era; the earliest men-
tion of it in Jewish literature was
in the 12th Century. The sym-
bol probably did not originate
with rabbinism, the official domi-
nant Judaism for more than 2,000
Years, but was probably derived
by the Cabal from the Templars.

Creative talent would hardly have
been produced by house of Mann
had there 'not taken place a vi-
talizing injection of exotic blood.
My paternal grandmother, who
came from Brazil. was half Cre-
ole — and for II einr ich and
Thomas Mann their mixed blood
became not only a biological
stimulant but the central spiritual
problem of their youth, the prob-
lem of Tonio Kroeger and the
problem of Ileinrich Mann's
"Zwischen den Rassen." I believe,
however, that this biological re-
vitalization would have been lost
had my father chosen his wife
among the young ladies of the old
families of Lubeck, Ilamburg or
Bremen. I may be permitted to
voice the suspicion that in such
a case we—his children—would
have turned out to be horribly
boring, thin-blooded, untalented
creatures. This, of course, is a
hypothesis impossible to prove.
But I feel instinctively that the
life-giving effect of the admixture
of Creole blood, to which Ger-
man literature and world litera-
ture owe two great authors, had
spent itself in a single generation.
Fortunately my father chose not
the daughter of some Ilanseatic
patrician but the wondcrful
woman who is my mother and the
mother of my five brothers and
sisters. Her father, the mathema-
tician and art collector Geheim-
rat Alfred Pringsheim, is of Jew-
ish descent, though himself no
longer a Jew; my grandmother,
Frau IIedwig Pringsheim-Dohm,
is of mixed blood, partly Jewish
and partly that of a Prussian
pastor's family.
We six children therefore do
represent a mixture of many
kinds of blood. I am content;
more than that, I am grateful for
it.
The complicated composition of
my "racial" mixture has never
been a problem for me. I have
always found it to my liking. It
has never caused me any suffer-
ing—and especially not today,
when every ass spouts "racial
philosophy."
Doubtless there are good and
poor racial strains among human
beings. But it by no means fol-
lows that the racially pure are
always the finest people or that
those of mixed blood are neces-
sarily inferior. Nature loves to
make daring experiments. She
may take a special joy in produc-
ing new strength when two old,
exhausted streams of blood come
together. Two families—or, to
take the larger view, two races—
seem to have reached the end.
They unite—and behold, a new
beginning has been made! Re-
generation cannot arise from an
inflexible, presumptuous principle
of self-sufficiency; it is, instead,
born of the adventures of strange
meetings, the adventure of love.
