Rosh Hashonah Greetings to the Jewish Communities Throughout Miehigl

Jewish Attitude on Divorce privilege the marriage contract

Although the Jew regards mar-
riage as a divine institution and
hence one to be maintained
throughout the husband's and
wife's life, he favors the discon-
tinuance of the marriage state un-
der certain well-defined and rea-
sonable conditions. In early times
the right of divorce was granted
to the husband with no provision
of the same right to the wife. In
order to prevent the abuse of this

was introduced which stipulated a
dowry for the wife in case of her
divorce.
At the present time no divorce
can take place according to Jew-
ish law except upon common agree-
ment of husband and wife. Nor is
the right to sue for divorce any
longer confined to the husband. A
wife, as well as a husband, may
sue for divorce on the ground of
adultery, immorality or loathesome
disease. In addition to these rea-

sons a wife may sue for divorce
on non-support or desertion.
While divorce is permitted, Jews
as a rule seek to avoid a legal sep-
aration between husband and wife.
The shame attached to divorce
may be recognized in the well-
known rabbinical sentiment, "Ile
who divorces his wife is hated be-
fore the Lord;" "God's altar sheds
tears for him who divorces the
wife of his youth."

Michigan's variety of industrial activi-
ties, its health resorts and manufacturing
centers continue so to enhance the state's
reputation that the prosperity of this com-
monwealth stands out among the most ro-
mantic achievements in the entire land dur-
ing the past two decades.

The growth of this state industrially,
educationally and agriculturally carries
with it a glamor that reflects the confidence
of the people in the opportunities offered
by this great country. Every community—
Pontiac, Flint, Grand Rapids, Muskegon,
Bay City, Saginaw, Mt. Clemens, Wyan-
dotte, Battle Creek, Jackson, Adrian, Port
Huron, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Kalamazoo,
and scores of other cities—attest to the
faith of the people of this state in the
opportunities for continued development of
our vast resources.

This confidence is reflected in the greet-
ings to be found in this issue, on the occa-
sion of the Jewish New Year, from mer-
chants and industrialists throughout the
state

The Detroit Jewish Chronicle, a Michi-
gan institution for the past 21 years, wishes
to extend its greetings to the people of this
state on this holiday occasion. As the organ
of Michigan Jewry—which finds it the only
source of information regarding the Jews
in this country as well as throughout the
world—The Chronicle is pleased on this oc-
casion once again to dedicate itself to the
service of the people of the state of Michi-
gan.
