THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AND
ITS AFFILIATED AGENCIES

Major efforts for the relief of Jews in Eastern Europe
and in Germany are sponsored by the American Joint
Distribution Committee.
The J. D. C., which has been functioning since the
outbreak of the World War, has helped the Jews in Ger-
many to carry on within the Reich and has sponsored
relief efforts for the refugees from that country to the
various lands of escape. It has provided an education for
thousands of Jewish children who have been forced out
from the general schools of Germany and has helped many
thousands to emigrate to new homes in other lands, in-
cluding Palestine.
The Joint Distribution Committee has operated 45
loan banks through which large numbers of borrowers in
Germany were enabled to carry on their business. The
committee co-operated with German-Jewish relief agen-
cies within the country and with other relief agencies out-
side of the country who help the persecuted German-Jews
remaining in the land as well as the refugees.
As the foremost American agency extending aid to
Jews in Europe and other overseas lands, the J. D. C. and
its affiliate, the American Joint Reconstruction Founda-
tion, appropriated $1,040,000 during 1935 to aid the Jews
in Poland.
According to the report, the 1935 appropriation for

chairman, announced that a line priated $376,000 to important child care federations, trade

DEMONSTRATION LESSONS POPULAR
IN THE UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS

Public Examinations Continue in the Various Branches
Throughout the City; Parents and Their
Friends Are Invited

The semi-public examinations
which are held from time to time
in the various branches of the
United Hebrew Schools have be-
come very popular.
The first examination of this
semester was held Sunday, Nov.
9 in Mr. Mathis' class of the
Tuxedo School. The parents of
the children, their friends, and
some members of the board were
present. This class composed of
beginners who registered at the
opening of this school semester
immediately after the high holi-
days, succeeded in completing in
a very short period of time the
first reader and mastered the
rudiments of reading Ivri.
Such examinations, or demon-

titration lessons, were held in the
same school, in the classes of B.
Panush, Mrs. B. Lerman, and A.
Schachter. Plans are being com-
pleted for examinations to be
held also in the higher classes of
Joseph Haggai, as well as in the
kindergarten classes conducted by
Mrs. Gertrude Lachover.
A series of demonstration les-
sons has also been planned for
the Philadelphia-Byron School.
The first of the series will be held
Sunday, Jan. 10, at 11 o'clock in
Miss Leah Pike's class. This is a
class known as the post-kinder-
garten group. The demonstrations
will be in reading, writing and in
the elements of Hebrew.
