"Oh, I'm aware of all that,
but what I don't like is the
loudness and the assertiveness
of the Jews, the way they push
them elves."
PERSECUTION RESPONSIBLE
That's your fault, for treat-
ing them as you have for 2,000
years. Discrimination, ostrac-
ism, persecution, repression and
suppression create an inferior-
ity complex which causes a few
people so suppressed to be over-
ambitious and over-assertive.
Some Jews have these faults,
and are perfectly aware of
them, and deplore them; but
they know, too, that these are
directly the result of the dis-
crimination against them by the
very few people who object to
these manifestations. It's your
fault, you Americans, if the
Jews among you are at times
objectionable in behavior. It's
because you dislike them, os-
tracize them, are at best con-
descent to them and tolerate
them, that they rebound in
self-assertion.
Then what about Catholics?
Many Protestant Americans re-
gard Catholics as they would
Pagans. The word causes more
hostility in their minds than
Pathan, Parsee, Buddhist, Mo-
hammedon. And all the time,
Catholics are Christians. They
worship the same God, the Fa-
ther, that we do; the same Je-
sus, the Son, that we do. They
beat us hands down when it
comes to charity and good
works, and the tender guidance
of little children.

the death of King Saul. This
messenger told the story of how
Saul, fearful of being captured
by they Philistines, said to him,
"Place thyself, I pray thee, by
me and slay me for a mortal
tremor bath seized on me al-
though my life is yet whole with-
in me." "So," continued the
messenger, "I placed myself by
him and slew him because I was
sure he could not live after his
fall." king David replied, "How
wrist thou not afraid to stretch
forth thy hand to destroy the
Lord's annointed." Then David
called one of his young men and
ordered the messenger slain. (II
Samuel, Chap. 1). It seems Saul
decided in favor of the "mercy
killing" and, certain of capture
and torture by the Philistines,
committed suicide. But David
condemned the "mercy killing."
An Historic Instance
Another philosophical consid-
eration of the "mercy killing" is
found in the Talmud in the mat-
ter of the death of the great
schOlar and leader of Israel, Rabbi
Chananiah ben Taradian (25 A.
D.). Ile was condemned by the
Roman government to be burned
alive and following this order,
the rabbi was wrapped in a scroll
of the law and placed on a slow
fire. In order to increase his suf-
fering and prolong his agony, wet
woolen sponges were placed over
his heart that he might not die
too quickly. At the execution,
his disciples, witnessing his ter-
rible agony, begged him to
breathe in the flame and thus has-
ten the end. The rabbi refused.
He said, "I will not interfere. Let
Him take the life Who has given
it and let a man not extinguish
it himself."
The executioner then said to
the victim, "Holy Rabbi, if I in-
crease the fire and remove the
soaked wool from your heart that
you may die more quickly, will
you promise me a reward in the
future world?" After this prom-
ise, the executioner intensified the
fire and removed the sponges so
that the soul quickly left the
rabbi.
This shows the theory of this
great leader. Ile would not jus-

The Jewish Attitude on the Question
of Euthanasia, or "Mercy Killing"

as other similar facts and opin-
ions mentioned in the Talmud and
Midrash and the law of the Jew-
ish religion in this regard is as
follows:
Mastering death Is murder. For
instance, if one closes the eyes
of a dying man while in the agony
of death, he thereby quickens that
death and it is like murder. Nev-
ertheless, when a man takes his
own life because he suffers un-
bearable and terrible pains, phy-
sical or spiritual, or because he
is in a dangerous position to be
killed or tortured then he is not
regarded as a murderer and de-
serves all religious rights and re-
spects of mourning.
But to be killed by another
man upon his request, and not
be guilty of murder, can only be
possible under the following con-
ditions:
I. If some vital organ of the

victim became so affected that
he is doomed to die, then is
he even by his life regarded
as death.
2. If he is doomed to terrible
Buffering.
3.1f the act of killing the •ic•
tim is not direct, but by
means which will cause his
death.

Under those conditions, in
view of the Jewish tradition, the
mercy killer is not guilty of mur-
der, but not allowed and not
advised to do it, because of the
traditionalprinciple that even a
man be in the gravest danger as
the sword's point is at his throat
still he must not give up hope.
Rabbi Joseph Kern is the author
of the "Shulchon Oruch," which
happened during the 11th century
at the time the Crusaders were
sweeping over the Jewish commu-
nities in France, Italy and Ger-
many, and killing Jews and their
families with great tortures. At
a certain town, which the Cru-
saders were approaching, the
rabbi permitted the Jews to mer-
cifully kill their own children and
save them from a more hideous
death and ill-use. Many children
were killed. Another rabbi, how-
ever, opposed him. Ile called
the first rabbi a murder, and curs-
ed him, saying that if he, the
second rabbi, were right, the first
shall die an unnatural death. It
happened as a surpise that the
mob left the town without harm-
ing a single Jew, except the first
rabbi, whom they killed with an
unnatural death.
