The Yom Kippur Fast

In Chapter 58 of Isaiah we find the
most descriptive reference to the Yom Kip-
pur fast:
Is such the fast that I have chosen?

The day for a man to afflict his soul?
Is it to bow down his head like a bull-
rush,
And to spread sackcloth and ashes
under him?
Wilt thou call this a fast,
And an acceptable day to the Lord?
Is not this the fast that I have chosen?
To loose the fetters of wickedness,
To undo the bands of the yoke,
And to let the oppressed go free,
Is it not to deal thy bread to the
hungry,
And that thou bring the poor that are
cast out to thy house?

Budd Schulberg, son of B. P.I
Schulberg, noted motion picture
executive, has a new job in the
story department at Selznick In-
ternational Studios. Young Schul-
berg, a Dartmouth College gradu-
ate of 1936, is to be developed as
a screen writer. On the same day
he joined this studio here, he had
another stroke of good luck. He
learned that a musical comedy,
which he wrote in collaboration
with Maurice Rapf, son of Harry
Rapf, famous film producer, had
been bought by the Golden Gate
International Exposition. Entitled
"Banned in Boston," the play will
be part of the entertainment
offered the thousands of visitors
expected in San Francisco in 1939.

Annual Education Month

Prejudicial Journalism

ij

In the face of impending troubles, the
observance of the annual Education Month
becomes a matter not only of idealism but
of necessity. We are obligated at this time
to demand from the Jewish community
that the education of the Jewish youth
should be not ignored and that Jewish cul-
tural values should be stressed much more
than they have ever been before.
The current observance of Hebrew Edu-
cation Month presents a challenge to every
Jewish parent and makes the demand that
the acquiring of knowledge by our young
people should be made a matter of prime
importance in Jewish life.

Lloyd George and Hitler

When David Lloyd George went to Ger-
1 ". , many
recently, it was stated in supposedly

reliable circles that the noted statesman
and war-time prime minister of Great a
Britain intended to use his influence for
modification of the anti-Semitic efforts by
the Nazis. When Lloyd George arrived
it was said that he spent three
in Germany,
hours
in a private conference with Hitler.
Several days thereafter came the Nurem-
terg outbursts and the revived anti-Sem-
itic campaign.
The question now naturally arises: What
happened to Lloyd George's influence
has Hitler? How come that the Welsh-
upon
so favorably and
man who had written
erthusiastically
about the Nazis could not
succeed in enlightening the Fuehrer about
the folly of his ways?

and Negroes. In instances of the Jews,
the emphasis on "Gentiles only" has be-
come so excessive that it makes it almost
impossible for Jews to secure jobs or to
rent apartments. The press can do a great
deal to help remedy this situation, and if
a strict policy is adopted by our news-
papers to refuse to be parties in efforts to
foment race, religious and colored preju-
dices, then we may hope to see a partial
solution to a very serious American issue.

"A Great Joint Essay"

Scrutator, eminent commentator for the
London Times, made some interesting
comments on the Palestine situation in an
article in which he viewed the pros and
cons of the present trouble.
"What the Jews have done for the Arab
is to discover Palestine for him, much as
we have discovered India for the Indians,"
Scrutator writes. He points out that "it
is through the Jew that Arab nationalism
has its best chance of success" and de-
clares that Palestine "is not Balfour's fad,
but a great joint essay in what might be
a beneficent work of British imperialism."
He pays a glowing tribute to Jewish re-
settlement efforts by calling it "the only
real colonizing work done in the 20th
century."
But the Arabs who benefit by Jewish
settlement in Palestine repay us for our
efforts and sacrifices by destroying what
we build for the common good. Such is
the lot of the pioneer who so often is un-
able to enjoy the fruits of his own labors.
But if there is an iota of justice left in the
