Scholarship Fund of Music Study
Club to Be Known Henceforth as
Sylvia Simons Scholarship Fund
Mrs. Edith Sauls, chairman of
the scholarship fund of the Music
Study Club announces that the
name of this fund will now be
known as the Sylvia Simons
Scholarship Fund.
Mrs. Souls states that the
change in name of the fund was
occasioned by an appreciation of
the efforts of the late Miss Syl-
via Simons, whose untimely death
several years ago took from De-
troit musical circles one of its
ablest musicians and an artist of
high calibre, Miss Simons had de-
voted and dedicated her life to
music.
It is announced at the same
time by Mrs. Souls that a very
generous contribution was re-
ceived by the Music Study Club
scholarship fund from Mrs. D.
W. Simons. Expressing her grati-
tude for this generous gift, Mrs.
Saula expressed the hope that De-
troit Jews remember the work
of the Music Study Club's
special scholarship effort which
aims to encourage the study of
music on the part of Jewish boys
and girls in the Jewish Commu-
nity Center and urges that con-
tributions be sent to her fort he
Sylvia Simons Scholarship Fund.
Her address is 2046 Taylor Ave.
The Music Study Club is also
e n c o uraging contributions in
memory of the late Ossip Gabri-
lowitsch, who subscribed whole-
heartedly to the program of the
club and who was to have ap-
peared as soloist on the program
of the Music Study Club last year.
The proposed 1935 concert was
called off due to the sudden illness
of the late Mr. Gabrilowitsch.
The Music Study Club, being a
part of the national feedration,
embodies three principal aims:
1. To make music an integral
part of the civic, industrial, edu-
cational and social life of the
nation.
2. To encourage and advance
creative musical art and promote
American artists.
3. To uphold high musical
standards, through education and
the fosteri
ng of high ideals.
The fund is now open to any
student of unusual ability and
with a teacher's recommendation,
will be assisted to further study.
The American Committee Appeal
requests organizations and indi-
viduals who are holding moneys for
the Polish relief fund to turn it
over to the treasurer, Joseph II.
Ehrlich, without delay. for trans-
mission to Poland.
There i3 still considerable money
outstanding on pledges among in-
dividuals and organizations. A
number of congregations made ap-
peals during the High Holidays
and obtained pledges of support.
These are asked to collect the
amounts as soon as possible and
mail or bring them in person to
Mr. Ehrlich at 237 Gratiot.
Full acknowledgement will be
made of all contributions in the
columns of The Chronicle.
