WE'RE GLAD THEY DIDN'T CHOOSE CHICKENS!

After the terrible massacre of Strasbourg Jewry during
ravaging Europe, some
those days when the Black Death was
individuals who wore plundering the synagogue discovered
a shofar. One of the pillagers, not knowing anything about
its use, expressed the opinion that the Jews had intended to
betray the city, and this ram's horn was to give the signal
to their allies outside the walls. Soon everybody accepted
this opinion, and the town council resolved that this fortun-
ate escape of the Strasbourg community must be remembered.
And so two large trumpets, resembling the shofar, were made
at
out of bronze. Both were blown daily. One was sounded
eight in the evening and was a signal for all Jews to depart
from the city, and the other was sounded at midnight and
was a reminder to Strasbourg citizenry of th alleged Jewish
plot to betray the city. •

GREETINGS

When the French appeared in Russia in 1812 the famous •
Shneor Zalman of Lodi (leader of the rational Chassidic
movement known as Robed) fervently prayed that Napoleon
should be defeated, for he feared that if the French were
successful heresy would increase in the land of the Czars.
But Shelomo of Karlin, another religious teacher, prayed
for the success of the French. One day, the story goes, the
two men met, and they decided that henceforth they would
not oppose each other in prayer, but the one whose prayers
would be granted would be the one who would blow the shofar
first on the following Rosh Bashonah. As you can readily
guess, Shneor Zalman of Lodi sounded the shofar first—
and Napoleon had to retreat from Moscow.

According to Prof. S. Cohon in,
"What We Jews Believe," the idea
of God in Judaism has, contrary
to popular opinion, undergone
striking changes. At first He was
regarded as one God among many
others, but, when the religious
thought of Israel progressed, this
conception could not be tolerated
and Ile became the One and only
God. The idea of Monotheism
gradually led to the identification
of Yahweh with the moral will
which orders the universe and with
the power making for the har-
monious working of nature's laws.
Yahweh, the God of Israel, was
transformed unto the universal
Father of mankind.
In the course of its development,
says Prof. Cohon, the idea of God
in Judaism was shaped by the
varied economic and political as
well as by the intellectual temper
of the Jewish people. The great

From the writings of Judah Al-Bargeloni, one of the
greatest codifiers of the Middle Ages, we learn that in some
places it was the custom, on the second day of Rosh Hashonah,
to read at home the entire book of Deuteronomy three times—
twice in the Hebrew text and once in the Aramaic translation.

Many centuries ago, in the land of Babylonia, the fol-
lowing custom (which resembles our present custom of swing-
ing a chicken around the head on the day before Yom Kippur)
was observed: About two or three weeks before Rosh Ilashonah
beans or peas would be planted in palm-leaf baskets for each
child in the house. And then, on the. day before New Year,
the children would swing their baskets around their heads
seven times—and would throw
. them • into the water.
