After the terrible massacre of Strasbourg Jewry during ravaging Europe, some those days when the Black Death was individuals who wore plundering the synagogue discovered a shofar. One of the pillagers, not knowing anything about its use, expressed the opinion that the Jews had intended to betray the city, and this ram's horn was to give the signal to their allies outside the walls. Soon everybody accepted this opinion, and the town council resolved that this fortun- ate escape of the Strasbourg community must be remembered. And so two large trumpets, resembling the shofar, were made at out of bronze. Both were blown daily. One was sounded eight in the evening and was a signal for all Jews to depart from the city, and the other was sounded at midnight and was a reminder to Strasbourg citizenry of th alleged Jewish plot to betray the city. • • • Chas.
