It is 'a sacred but staggering burden and responsi-
bility which the year just closed, bequeathes to the young-
est issue of Mother Time: the year 5697. "I have seen
Israel and behold, it is scattered like a leaderless flock
upon the mountains." In order to describe the present
state of Jewry among the nations of the earth, in the dif-
ferent lands of their abode,
WC must add to the picture
of the prophet the following
words "Scattered upon all
mountains, like a defense-
less, forlorn flock, Israel be-
comes all over the prey of
its ferocious enemies, who
waylay and wait for it be-
neath all trees and behind
all bushes in order to strike
deep their bloody claws in-
to the feeble emaciated
body of Israel."
It is on account of the
many perils and menaces
which surround the Jai not
alone in the Galuth-lands
but also in Palestine that
the coming Rosh Hashonah will be less celebrated as a
day of felicitations, of exchanging of good wishes and
renewal of hopes and golden visions; it will be rather
remembered as "Zichron Teruoh", as a day of "the blow-
ing of the Shofar," which shall summon with its stirring
voice every Jew and Jewess, to do his or her duty to
Israel at large; to save "the hapless forlorn flock."
It is not without definite purpose and aim that our
sages instituted the reading of the sacrificial offering of
Isaac by Abraham, the first Jew, on Rosh Hashonah. Our
sages were moved in their choice of the scriptural lesson
for the high holy days by the clear purpose to teach and
examplify by it the sacrificial duty of the Jew.
Without this magnificent sacrificial spirit, as mani-
fested by the Jew in all the sorely tried epochs of his his-
tory, without the consecrated willingness of the Jew to
bear and share the burden of his fellow Jew, he would
have disappeared long time ago from the stage of history!
In order to be worthy of the sacrificial deeds of our
forefathers, in order to emulate their heroic example we
will have to learn, to assimilate and to make a guiding
principle in our life the little word, which occurs three
times in the story of Isaac's sacrifice, the little word:
"Hineni," "Here am I"! It is the Jewish password and
motto for service, sacrifice and duty! Patriarchs, Proph-
ets and Saints consecrated and offered themselves with
this word to the service of God, Israel and their ideals!
The Rabbi taught: "While all of us Jews pray that
God shall write us in the book of good life, we are liable
to overlook that there is also a book of goodness, of good
deeds wherein by virtue of our moral freedom none but
ourself and only ourself can write our names!"
Let us ponder deeply upon the words of the rabbi.
May it be the fruit of the earnest meditation of heart on
the holy days that we resolve to sign our name in the
book of sacrificial deeds and works, because next to the
mercy of the. Ilord, only the brotherly unity and love of
Israel—manifested not as sentiments and words but in
sacrificial deeds—the Jew will be saved and become once
more entrenched in the land of his fathers, live in safety
in the country of his adoption, perform his pricely mis-
sion and glorify the God of Israel.
