Dr. Gebenschter, having, by the
sheer force of his personality, re-
stored order to a degree that made
it possible for his low voice to be
heard, extended his plea to include
a program for united action
against the enemies of Nitohan
Jewry, vociferus objections arose
in the camp of Dr. Shagitz's fol-
lowers.
Abraham Treyff succinctly ex-
pressed all these objections when
he said: "The most dangerous
thing of all would be for us Nito-
hens of the mosaic faith to write
as anything more than a purely
religious group. It might even
revive that most dangerous
libel of all, the myth of the Elders
of Zion."
An irreverent "So what?" which
rose from the floor was drowned
in a burst of enthusiastic applause.
Even greater applause greeted the
next speaker, Rabbi Menahem Ko-
sher, when he exhorted his hearers
to unite in only one thing—prayer
that the misled Nitohans be
brought to see the light.

LARONICLE

and THE LEGAL CHRONICLE

Rabbi Kosher had just raised
his hand in a solemn gesture and
intoned: "Before adjourning this
meeting let us pray to the God of
Israel," when the irreverent voice
again arose, this time to demand
the floor. And because the owner
of the voice was Benzion Mamm-
zer, the brilliant young editor of
the Inegetznitch Daily Herald,
even Rabbi Kosher found it politic
to yield.
What Mammzer told the meeting
has not been recorded; before be-
ginning to speak he exacted a
pledge of secrecy from all who
were present, and forbade the sec-
retary of the Kehillah to make
even the most rudimentary notes
on his address. But the course
taken by events in the next few
months was enough to indicate to
astute observers just what was the
recommendation he made to his
fellow Jews of Nitoh. For the
moment suffice it to say that after
the meeting finally did adjourn the
Shagitz camp seemed not only dis-
grunted but frightened, while Max-
imilian Oyveh and his followers'
appeared highly exultant.

It was late in October when a
band of Nitohan Guards, a group
of youthful anti-Semites, started
out blithely one midnight to pla-
card the main streets of Inergetz-
nitoh with posters warning Nito-
han maidenhood against the "de-
generate Jewish beast." In ac-
cordance with instructions issued
at headquarters they stopped first
at the Shagitz bank, to put up
posters to the right and left of the
main entrance. Pieta re their
amazement when they found the
wall already covered with a huge
sign of unknown origin!
"JEWS OF NIT011," read the
sign, "HAVE NO COMMERCE
WITH THE GOYIM, LEST TIIE
C II E R E hi BE LAID UPON
YOU." And the signature, in flee-
red letters, was: THE. ELDERS.
It did not, of course, take very
long for the Nitohan Guards to
tear down these signs and put up
their own. But it did take some
time; and a similar clearing of
wall space had to be done at every
point of their itinerary, not to
mention some in-between stations.
So that the youths who had started
out to gaily at midnight for an
hour or two of clean, innocent fun
were kept busy till dawn. Then,
weary but filled with a sense of
duty well done, they went home
and to sleep at last.
But not for long. At eight o'clock
• second detachment of Nitohan
Guards was dispatched to observe
the consternation on Jewish faces
as the signs met their eyes. But
the Jewish faces showed not Con-
sternation, but awe. And the signs
said—you guessed it. Not the antl-
Semitic placards, but the posters
signed by the Elders stared from
every available bit of wall space.
Many a young Nitohan Guard
received the bawling-nut of his
life that day. Not a few young
Nitohan Guards began to feel that
this business of handing-out op-
probious epithets without restraint
could be overdone.

Rumors of the curse of the
Elders began to circulate among
the people of Inergetznitoh. Quick-
ly they spread through the whole
country, striking terror into the
hearts of the Nitohan peasantry.
The internal situation grew threat-
ening.
Dogon Roll, propaganda chief of
the Toblazes Ministry, reissued the
anti-Jewish boycott proclamation
just in time to drown out the
voices that were demanding an in-
vestigat . on into the fiscal affairs of
Nitoh. Dec. 1 was set as the oflicial
inauguration of the boycott.
But when the Storm Troopers
went to take their posts before
Jewish shops, to see to it that no
Nitohan would henceforth defile
himself by trading with Jews, they
found the posts already taken. And
by Jews. By Jews in a strange
uniform, never before seen in the
land of Nitoh. A fire-red uniform
with black Hebrew lettering on the
sleeve. And, for the benefit of the
non-Hebrew-reading public, each
Jewish guard wore a cap on which
these words were inscribed in Nito-
han: "Guard of the Legion of the
Elders of Zion."

elections were held. And the Nazi
propaganda bore fruit. The Nito-
ban National Socialist Party —
which had long been clamoring for
a government modeled after that
led by Adolf Hitler, and which had
long been enjoying the support of
the famous banking house of Sha-
gitz and Son—won a clear parlia-
mentary majority, and its leader,
Hugo Toblazes, became Premier of
Nitoh.
His first official act was to issue
a proclamation commanding all
loyal Nitohans to boycott all Jews,
discharge all Jewish employes and
discontinue all relations, marital
or otherwise, with Jews. His next '
official act was to summon Dr.
Kalmen Shagitz to a financial con-
ference. Of this conference a frag-
mentary record has been pre-
served.
Hugo Toblazes had informed
Shagitz that henceforth he would
enjoy the status of honorary Nito-
has, and was just approaching the
more important point of his little
speech, the matter of a sizable gov-
ernment loan, when the banker,
visibly perturbed, simultaneously
interrupted the leader and commit-
ted a grave breach of etiquette.
