enlisted the services of many I
prominent Rabbis in nation-wide
meetings held last spring when 278
cities were visited. Plans are now',
being made to hold meetings and
conferences in 600 cities this fall.
Many prominent Jewish leaders
are participating as local and na-
tional sponsors, speakers and com-
mitteemen.
An integral part of the Em-
ergency Peace Campaign is the
activity this summer of 225 col-
lege men and women acting as
peace volunteers. These are com-
posed of 41 teams working in
politically strategic areas. A
number of students of the Hebrew
Union College of Cincinnati have
joined. It is expected that the
coming summer will see a num-
ber of rabbinical students from
other seminaries throughout the
country enrolled in this movement.
Dr. Braunstein will shortly issue
an appeal to the rabbis of America,
requesting them to devote one of
their High Holiday sermons to the
cause of peace. This effort, with a
similar request to the Christian
ministers throughout the country,
will be followed by discussion

SCIENCE
Man's ceaseless searching for new means of alleviating
pain, curing disease, uncovering the secrets of nature and
adding to the comfort of civilization added immensely to the
store of scientific knowledge during the past year. On the
year's scientific roll of honor were many Jews, among them
the following:
Drs. William Thalheimer and Sidney 0. Levinson of Chi-
cago developed a serum against the deadly hemolytic strep-
tococcus; Prof. Bergman of the Daniel Sieff Institute, Pal-
estine, discovered a method of extracting pectin from the
inner skin of oranges; Dr. William Branower of New York
invented an improved respirator; Dr. Charles Elsberg of New
York perfected a new technique for detecting the presence,
size and location of brain tumors; Dr. David I. Macht of Bal-
timore discovered cobra venom to be an effective anesthetic;
Dr. Edward Kasner of New York solved an ancient mathe-
mathical problem by measuring the horned angle; Drs. Leon
J. Robinson and Sydney Selesnek of Chicago developed a
new gas to sober the drunk; Dr. Daniel Ziskin of Minneapolis
perfected a cure for several dental diseases; Dr. Albert S.
Heyman of New York perfected an electric device to revive
a heart that has stopped; Dr. M. Bercovitz of Paris found a
new pregnancy test; Dr. Edward Woldman of Cleveland found
a new method of treating stomach ulcers; Drs. Aaron Mar-
golis of Arizona and Max Pinner of New York discovered
why sunburn causes illness; Dr. Gregory Pincus of Harvard
fertilized a rabbit's egg without the use of male sperm; Dr.
Bethel Solomons of Ireland developed an operation to cure
childlessness in women; Dr. Edwin J. Cohn of Harvard found
scientific proof that the spark of life consists of billions of
hitherto unknown electrical charges in the human body; Dr.
Harold Osserman of New York developed a new dental anes-
thetic, as did Dr. Leroy Hartman of New York; Dr. Mendel
Jacobi found a new cancer treatment for animals; Dr. Soma
Weiss of Harvard found that lack of vitamin B may cause
heart disease; Dr. Benjamin Jablons of New York developed
a new kidney extract to treat kidney disease; Dr. Joel Press-
man of Los Angles perfected a new weapon against throat
cancer; Dr. E. A. Greenspan of Montreal found a new treat-
ment for anemia; David Neiman of Palestine discovered the
ancient Egyptian secret of embalming; Dr. Jacob Jacobson
of France discovered a cure for loss of vision due to trachoma;
Dr. Gregory Schwartzman of New York found clues to causes
of diseases of old age; Dr. Emanuel Josephson of New York
perfected it treatment for glaucoma.
