Vallat's remark was challenged
by Eduard lierriot, president of

veteran refused to be silenced.
"For once," he declared, "France
will be led by an Israelite. I have
nothing agaimt Jews but I as-
sure you there are millions of
peasants who are not in favor
of studying the Talmud." At
this point Ilerriot interrupted and
shoutfd angrily: "I know neither
Catholic nor Protestant nor Jew.
I know only Frenchmen." While
the Chamber remained in an up
roar, ilerriott warned Vallat not
to repeat his attack on Blum. But
Vallat refused to retract his re-
marks except to add that "fur

its Disraeli."

The anti-Semitic attack on Pre-
mier Blum was not confined to the
Chamber of Deputies. L'Action
Fancaise, organ of th ereaction-
ary monarchists, came out with
a screaming front page headline,
"France Under a Jew" and de-
manded immediate legislation to
curb the civil rights of Jews. An-
other right wing paper was con-
fiscated on order of Minister of
the Interior Salengro because it
published an article declaring
that "the republic is in danger
from Jews and Freemasons who
are our enemies. They are re-

Protestant Churches Urge Mem-

bers to Fight Black Legion

NEW YORK. (WNS)—Vigor-
ously condemning the Black Le-
gion as "a menace to civil lib-
erty", the Federal Council of
Churches of Christ in America,
which represents 23 Protestant
denominations, publicly disown
the Black Legion in a statement
branding "its use of the name
of God Almight and its descrip-
tion of itself as Protestant, AP
unjustifiable and shameful." The
statement declared that the Black
Legion had "disclosed the ex-
treme cruelty and social danger
to which a red-baiting, anti-Sem-
itic, anti-Negro, anti-Catholic or-
ganization easily goes," and ap-
pealed to Christians throughout
the country "to exercise the ut-
most vigor is opposing such ten-
dencies as these, which are sow-
ing fears, hatreds and dissensions
at a time of great social emer-
gency and danger, when our peo-
ple shoUld beable to think sober-
ly and to act unitedly." The Fed-
eral Council also called attention
to the fact that "there are signs
(in this country) of a whispering
anti-Semitic agitation such as,
unrestrained, has left an indel-
ible stain upon the German gov-
ernment."
