Brilliant Lecture
By Shalom Spiegel
Given Under Auspices of Sha•rey 1
Zedek Men's Clob
lJ
Before an audience of 500 gath-
ered in the auditorium bf Shaarey
Zedek Synagogue last Sunday eve-
ning, Dec. 8, Dr. Shalom Spiegel,
professor of Hebrew in the Jewish
Institute of Religion, delivered a
masterful address on the subject
of "Jewish Self-Hate", the second
lecture of the series sponsored by
the Shaarey Zedek Men's Club
Forum.
Introduced by Nathan Milstein,
chairman of the Forum Committee,
as • "young man who has made his
scholastic mark," Dr. Spiegel del-
ved into his subject in a simple,
concrete manner, his presentation
being poetic and human rather
than remote and academic. He be-
gan by citing various instances of
self-hate in Jewish life, prefacing
them with a survey of Vincent
Sheehan's recently published work,
"A Personal History," in which the
author as an ignorant, naive col-
lege freshman, relates how he in-
advertently joined a Jewish frater-
nity on the University of Chicago
campus, and suffered social ostrac-
ism as a result, culminating in his
resignation from the society.
Dr. Spiegel pointed out how the
Jew too feels he is not wanted in a
hostile Gentile world and cited sev-
eral instances of the psychotic ef-
fects of anti-Semitism on the per-
sonalities of young Jews. lie men-
tioned Dr. Theodor Lensing, a mar-
tyr to Nazi fury, who wrote in his
"Diary of a Jewess" ,"I cannot era-
dicate my Jewishness, which clings
to me like leprosy. I cannot rid my-
self of 'Judenblut'." His heroine
ends her life in an insane asylum.
Going back to pre-Hitlerite Ger-
many, Spiegel also mentioned the
journalist Bernhard Friedlander,
who, when the Jewish race question
reached a peak in public discussion
in 1881, as especially exemplified
by the vicious attacks of Dr. Rohl-
ing, who referred to Jewish incor-
rigibility as "rassische schwein-
erei", wrote a letter to Rohling,
thanking him for his contribution
to solving the Jewish problem. and
then killed himself. Spiegel's third
example was the case of blond,
blue-eyed, Arthur Froehlich, who
attempted to rationalize himself
away from his Jewish origin by
pointing out two tendencies in civil-
ized lie—the one, a peasant rela-
tion of intimate, basic contact with
the fixed habitat of the soil, a pri-
mary relation, the other, a noma-
dic, transitory secondary relation
of merchants to the shipping mar-
ket—attributing the "Secondary
Spirit" to Jewish influence on
Gentile life, and then excepting
himself from this "Secondary Spir-
it" become of his emancipated self,
four generations remailed from the
ghetto. Froehlich's attempts to
purge his psyche of every Jewish
taint ultimately ended in the onset
of a mania persecutoria, and the
downfall of a once-brilliant mind.
A fourth instance of self-hate in-
volved a youth who committed sui-
cide at the early age of 23, torn
by an interval loathing of his an-
cestry. A fift hwas the gifted post-
war Jewish-German statesman,
Walter Rattenau, who, as a young
man, wrote an essay entitled,
"Hear, Oh Israel," in which he at-
tended the physical clumsiness of
the Jewish race and their alien
rhythm of life, and, as an old man,
refusing to be protected against
possible assasination, frivolously
threw away his life to his mur-
derous enemies in 1922.
Analyzing these examples as
typical of a swelling trend in Jew-
ish life, Dr. Spiegel pointed out
that ancestor-hatred sets up a
merciless internal judge within the
depths of one's being—a cause of
self-hate. "Anti-Semitism," he said,
"is a Gentile neurosis, not a Jewish
problem. While it is true that the
Gentile must free himself from this
medieval insanity. the immediate
danger for young Jews is that of
Jewish insanity. A thorough-going
Hebrew education, linking the
young Jew, through the cultural
continuum of Isaiah, Amos, Ezekiel
and Hananiah ben Aradyon with
his historic post, and stimulating
in him the fresh vitality of the
Jewish spirit, is the only counter-
agent of the virus of Jewish self-
hate." Dr. Spiegel pointed out that
it is impossible to translate such
basically Jewish consepts as Emeth
and Zedek by English works, just
as the ideas "religion" and "nation-
ality" are foreign to the Hebrew-
speaking mentality, and hence ad-
vocated learning Hebrew As the
only valid key to the Jewish spirit
He concluded by stressing the fact
that only by emphasizing the "bene-
ficence of divergence" could the
Jew face the western world staunch
and unafraid, transcending the
petty dislocations of his character
and ideals necessary to adjust on
an assimilationist and self-hating
basis.
In answering question on his lec-
ture, Dr. Spiegel pictured an ideal
education for the young Jewish
generation motivated around a
knowledge of the Hebrew languale,
stressed the eternity of Hebrew
phraseology from Bibilical days
through our own into the far future
because of the eternity of Hebrew
ideaology, and paid tribute to Ber-
nard Isaacs for his work with the
United Hebrew Schools in Detroit.
A reception for Dr. Spiegel was
held in the home of Harry M.
Shulman, president of the Men's
Club, after the lecture.

Foreign Minister Says Rumania
Subsidises Anti-Semites
BUCHAREST. — (WNS) —
While Foreign Minister Nicholas
Titulescu was openly accusing the
Roumanian government of sub-
sidizing the anti-Semitic move-
ment to the extent of 20,000,000
let ($150,000), the three leading
anti-Semitic groups in Roumania
banded together in one united anti-
Jewish front under the joint lead-
ership of Prof. Alexander Cuss
and former Premier Alexander
Vaida-Voevod. Titulescu's charge,
made at a meeting of the cabinet,
threw a sinister light on the union
of the pro-Nazi National Christian
Party, the Iron Guard and the dis-
gruntled members of the National
Peasant Party who went with
Vaida-Voevod when he was ex-
Polled from that party because it
refused to tolerate his anti-Jewish
Program. The united anti-Jewish
party is planning to push anti-
Semitic legislation in parliament

Kurt Peiser, executive director of the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation, a member of the col-
lection committee, this week made the follow-
ing appeal to contributors to the 1935 Allied
Jewish Campaign, urging them to pay their
pledges at once:
"Winter puts extra burdens on the relief
agencies of the Jewish Welfare Federation.
Heavy clothes, medicine, coal are urgently
needed.
"k is during these months that those who
are dependant upon us are subjected to still
greater suffering, unless we take care of them.
"Yourpart of the job lies in fulfilling the
pledge you have made—not only to pay the
amount you designated in your subscription to
the Allied Jewish Campaign — but to make
regular payments on your account. That check,
which is already past due and might just as
well be in the mail today without any hard-
ship upon you, will go a long way toward mak-
ing many lives endurable at a time when even
those who enjoy warm clothes, comfortable
homes, plenty of food, long for brighter skies."
