6th Anniversary
Of Broadcasting
On Sunday, Nov. 24, Hyman Alt-
Dr. Lynn Harold Hough to Preach Interdenominational man, broadcasting the Altman
Jewish Period over Station WMBC,
Message at Institute of Arts on Thursday Morning
On Thanksgiving morning, at
10:30 o'clock, there will be held in
the large auditorium of the Detroit
Institute of Arts the 34th annual
Citizens' Interdenominational Com-
munity Thanksgiving Service.
This service was instituted more
than three decades ago by a small
group of liberal ministers, of whom
Dr. Leo H. Franklin, of Temple
Beth El, is the only survivor in
Detroit. It was the first service of
its kind to be held anywhere and
so revolutionary was it in the
minds of many that it became the
subject of editorial comment in
many newspapers in this country
and in the London, England, Times.
The service has been a definite and
important factor in the establish-
ment of better understanding and
co-operative effort among the vari-
ous religious creeds in Detroit. It
has inspired many similar services
in all parts of the country and has
as well been the direct inspiration
of a great number of neighoorhood
union services in Detroit.
At the service this year the ser-
mon will be preached by Dr. Lynn
Harold Hough, formerly minister
of the Central Methodist Church of
this city and now dean of Drew
Theological Seminary at Madison,
N. J. Dr. Hough is known to be
one of the keenest thinkers as well
as one of the most eloquent preach-
ers in thin country. lie has chosen
as the subject of his discourse at
the Thanksgiving service a very
vital and suggestive theme. He
calls it "America-1935."
The chairman of the service this
year will be Dr. Franklin. Repre-
sentatives of nine denominations
will participate in the exercises.
The music will be furnished by the
choir of the Church of Our Father
under the direction of Archibald C.
Jackson. The offering will be for
the benefit of the Detroit Commun-
ity Fund.
Among those participating are
the following: Dr. Augustus P.
Reccord of the Unitarian-Univer-
salist Church, Dr. C. E. Mieras of
the First Presbyterian Church, Rev.
John D. Howell of the A. 51. E.
Chuch, Dr. Warren Wheeler Pick-
ett of the Woodward Avenue Con-
gregational Church, Mr. ht. Hubert
O'Brien, representing the Roman
Catholics, Dr. Frederick B. Fisher
of the Central Methodist Church,
Dr. Hugh Chamberlin Burr of the
Woodward Avenue Baptist Church,
and the Right Rev. Kirk B. O'Far-
rell of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Services begin promptly at I
