A Bewildered Germany

The Germans are in no sense to be en-
vied in the present crisis.
Even the most ruthless advocates of the
boycott and every other weapon of retalia-
tion against the Nazi brutalities will admit
that not all Germans are inhuman. Only
when the rule of Hitler comes to an end
will it be possible to judge what percent-
age of the German people actually op-
poses the present bestialities.
The following is one of the very interest-
ing stories just emanating from Nazidom,
illustrating the fact that even the rank and
file of the Storm Troopers are not neces-
sarily Nazis:

First Storm Trooper (to newcomer): "What
are you doing In that uniform? I thought
you were a Communist?''
Second Storm Trooper: "I had to be in the
swim, you know."
First Storm Trooper: "How do you like the
other men in your company?"
Second Storm Trooper: "They're all fine
except the leader—he's a Nazi."

The manner in which Germans are be-
coming bewildered over what is occurring
in their country is illustrated also by two
letters reprinted in the Manchester Guar-
dian. The following are typical of the
flood of letters being received by German
clergymen requesting them to ascertain
proofs of the non-Jewish ancestry of their
parishioners:

"I *Muttony beg you to produce my
grandfather by return and free of charge be-
cause I need him urgently for my Aryan de-
scent—Heil Hitler."
"Your Reverence: Please don't be angry
and be so kind as to see about my grand-
mother. I must send her to my son In Berlin

this week, because he has had orders to pro-
duce evidence that his grandmother was not

• Jewess."

Perhaps a bewildered Germany will
soon come to her senses and, instead of
remaking upset will decide to rebel
against injustice and dictatorial insanity.

forward on railroads which Jewish capitalists
may have helped to build, or to wear uniforms
treated with dyes which Jewish chemists may
have helped to discover. Thorough should be
the last word.

Thorough, is, indeed, the Nazi slogan:
thorough in hatred, thorough in insanity.
Unfortunately, the rest of the world is also
thorough: entirely too thorough in gentle
kindness with which Nazi brutality is
dealt. It is diplomacy that is playing a
role of careful and watchful waiting, and
is in the meantime permitting an inhuman
state to plant roots of bigotry and hatred
wherever it strikes soil. It is to be hoped
that human kindness does not err in this
instance, and that Nazi brutality will,
after all, defeat its own ends.

Nazi Kidnapers

On several occasions Americans have
been outraged by the kidnaping of chil-
dren and grown-ups, either for purposes
of exacting vengeance, or for extracting
cash from wealthy relatives.
The Nazis appear to have learned the
kidnapers' lesson. The kidnaping of Ber-
thold Jacob, German - Jewish refugee
journalist, from Switzerland, has been fol-
lowed by other kidnaping threats. This
week another Jewish refugee, a man by
the name of Kurtz, his wife and child,
were kidnaped from Prague and smuggled
over the frontier into Germany.
The Swiss government, in a note to Ber-
lin protesting this kidnaping, called it a
"grave violation of Swiss sovereignty." In
reality, it is a grave violation of human
sovereignty.
It is sad enough that Nazis are free to
act brutally with their victims on their
own soil. But when they invade other
territories is high time for the sounding
of a worldwide protest against bestialities
of perverts. Perhaps the invasion of for-
eign territory will cause European powers
to act in condemnation of Nazi practices
and kidnapings.

It is no wonder therefore that in their respective trades.
