Library Acquires 250 New Vol•

umes Since First of Year.

A shipment of 150 books received
by the Shaarey Zedek library last
week is announced by the library
committee, bringing the total num-
ber of volumes acquired since Jan.
1, 1935, to more than 250. The
most recent group of books is rep-
resentative of many departments
of Jewish literature. It includes a
valuable collection of works deal-
ing with Biblical interpretation
and criticism. It abounds in books
of fiction, history, biography, es-
says and studies in religion. An
interesting group consists of stu-
dies in ancient Hebrew law made
by the late Judge Mayer Sultz-
berger of Philadelphia, a distin-
guished jurist, scholar and com-
munal leader who owned one of the
finest private libraries in America.
New books received include "The
Rise and Destiny of the German
Jews," by Dr. Jacob Marcus of
Hebrew Union College; "The Ger-
man Jew," by Dr. Abraham Myer-
son, noted neurologist, and Dr.
Isaac Goldberg, an authority on
Hispano-American literature and
author of many books; "Modern
Palestine," edited by Jessie Samp-
ter, and two columes of "Plays of
the Yiddish Theater," translated
from the Yiddish.
Among the interesting titles
noted among the newly acquired
books are The Samaritans," by
Dr. Stones Gaoler, the famous Ang-
lo-Jewish scholar; "Jewish Self-
Government in the Middle Ages,"
by Prof. Louis Finkelstein of the
Jewish Theological Seminary, who
is remembered here for two bril-
liant addresses delivered at Shaa-
rey Zedek during the past three
years, and who will speak here
again next Friday, and Kirkpat-
rick's "The Doctrine of the Pro-
phets."
David S. Zemon is chairman of
the Shaarey Zedek Library Board.
