the publication of the first

of the Hebrew Union College in
Ci ncinnat i.
The Mekilta of Rabbi Ishmael
contains an exposition of a large
part of the Book of Exodus and
represents two !slain bodies of in-
terpretation—the legal and the
moral of religious teachings. The
work also contains allusions to
historical events and legends not
found elsewhere.
These two volumes are to be
followed by a third •niume which
will contain the remainder of the'
Mekilta and an index. They con-
stitute a most notable addition to
the Schiff Library of Jewish Clas-
sirs, made possible by the generous
donation of Jacob H. Schiff nearly
twenty years ago. These and their
predecessors also mark a substan-
tial advance in Jewish scholarship
in the matter of exact texts of
Hebrew classics and their rendi-
o n into English garb for the first

VIENNA. 1JTA) — Dr. Saul
Chayes has just issued his "Lexi-
con of Pseudonyms in Hebrew
and
Yiddish Literature." The
book, 'covering the period from
the Gaonic epoch in the tenth
century to the present day, con-
tains 5,145 pseudonyms in He-
brew and Jewish letters.
In his work Dr. Chayes points
Out that in these two literatures
Jews always held the work more
important than the man. There-
fore they had the custom of re-
ferring to the name of the work
rather than that of the author.
In some cases he deals with the
motives which led to the adoption
of the pseudonyms.
