The Mekilta of Rabbi Ishmael contains an exposition of a large part of the Book of Exodus and represents two !slain bodies of in- terpretation—the legal and the moral of religious teachings. The work also contains allusions to historical events and legends not found elsewhere. These two volumes are to be followed by a third •niume which will contain the remainder of the' Mekilta and an index. They con- stitute a most notable addition to the Schiff Library of Jewish Clas- sirs, made possible by the generous donation of Jacob H. Schiff nearly twenty years ago. The book, 'covering the period from the Gaonic epoch in the tenth century to the present day, con- tains 5,145 pseudonyms in He- brew and Jewish letters. In his work Dr. Chayes points Out that in these two literatures Jews always held the work more important than the man. There- fore they had the custom of re- ferring to the name of the work rather than that of the author. In some cases he deals with the motives which led to the adoption of the pseudonyms.
