PLEA FOR HADASSAH
PROPOSED HOSPITAL

Commenting on a cabled an-
nouncement from l'alestine that
isle Jewish physicians and den-
tists, most of them from Germany,
have entered Palestine this year,
Mrs. Edward Jacobs, farmer na-
tional president of Hadassah, the
Women s Zionist Organization of
American, pointed to the urgent
necessity for up-to-date scientific
facilities in l'alestine to enable the
new arrivals to continue with their
professional work.
"These doctors need association
with a modern scientific institute
of medicine,' said Mrs. Jacobs. "A
readjustment must tae made in the
medical field in Palestine so that
these men may be absorbed into
the general scheme of medical prac-
tice. It is most essential for emin-

Miriam enters, dancing, and the others dance with her.
When the dancing ends, there is a flash of lightning,
a roar of thunder, and the figures recoil. Then flashes of
blinding light pierce the darkness, and an illuminated
decalogue is revealed. The people take up the shout:
"Naase venishma—We shall do; we have heard."
Upward they press, still groping toward the higher
light, to the reaches of Sinai.
THIRD EPISODE: The Glory of Jerusalem.
For forty years the children of Israel wandered in the

Joel declared: "A nation is coming up upon my land, chairmen,
with Mrs. Jacobs on the
strong, anti without number, whose teeth are the teeth of tdtbling

Rome.
Roman soldiers invade the scene. Martial tubas sound -
as cruel Titus, followed by generals and torch bearers,
strides to the foreground. Suddenly, a flaming torch is
hurled full into the Temple. A voice cries out for mercy,
appealing to "Ribbono Shel Olom—Sovereign of the Uni-
verse."
The smoke begins to swirl around the floor of the
Temple and a groan arises from the multitude. Priests
and Levites rush to the Holy of Holies to immolate them-
selves with the holy vessels. While the flames consume
them, they cry out "Sh'ma Israel—Hear, 0 Israel, the
Lord, our God, the Lord is One"—their last declaration
of faith.
Other priests carry off the Scroll, a symbol of Israel's
carrying the Torah with it throughout the dispersion. A
voice rings out : "Roche' .mvakeh al boneho—Rachel
S
Weeps for Her Children."
The magnificent Temple is reduced to ruins and there
is left standing the Wailing Wall, the last remnant of a
magnificent structure.
FIFTH EPISODE: Spain
Exile, dispersion and ceaseless wandering are the fate
of the children of Israel. Yet wherever they have rested,
from Babylon to the Islands of the West, they have
founded great centers of learning and cities humming with
trade. Fifteen hundred years after the destruction of the
Temple, Israel is in Spain, enriching the land with poets,
philosophers, scientists and statesmen. But here. too,
intolerance raises its head.
Jewish merchants and artisans are seen in the fore-
ground during one of the Spanish holidays. Toward the
left is a group of Spanish peasants picnicking and cele-
brating the occasion with a joyous dance. As the time
passes, the groups grow closer together and become
friendly. Spanish grandees arrive for the festive occasion
which is to be marked by the elevation to high Mike of
two Jewish notables. King Ferdinand and Queen Isa-
bella arrive to take part in the ceremony.
The tranquility of the scene is broken as the crowd
suddenly realizes that two Jews are being elevated to
power and influence. Confusion and the mutterings of
rebellion are the climax of the scene: the Queen herself
orders the Jews out of the country. As the Jews march
off, lamentations are heard as they intone the traditional
Spanish-Jewish lament—Kol
SIXTH EPISODE: Slav Countries. The Birth of Joy in
Humility.
After a hundred years of darkness and sullen despair,
the veil is again lifted. Jewish life has shifted its center
Detroit—and
to the East of Europe, the Slav countries.
A group of weary burdened Jews crosses before the
stage, carrying aloft the Torah which has represented the
strength and the source of renewal of the Jewish people.
The lament of Kol Nidre is still heard. its plaintive tones
