Yet wherever they have rested, from Babylon to the Islands of the West, they have founded great centers of learning and cities humming with trade. Fifteen hundred years after the destruction of the Temple, Israel is in Spain, enriching the land with poets, philosophers, scientists and statesmen. But here. too, intolerance raises its head. Jewish merchants and artisans are seen in the fore- ground during one of the Spanish holidays. Toward the left is a group of Spanish peasants picnicking and cele- brating the occasion with a joyous dance. As the time passes, the groups grow closer together and become friendly. Spanish grandees arrive for the festive occasion which is to be marked by the elevation to high Mike of two Jewish notables. King Ferdinand and Queen Isa- bella arrive to take part in the ceremony. The tranquility of the scene is broken as the crowd suddenly realizes that two Jews are being elevated to power and influence. Confusion and the mutterings of rebellion are the climax of the scene: the Queen herself orders the Jews out of the country. As the Jews march off, lamentations are heard as they intone the traditional Spanish-Jewish lament—Kol SIXTH EPISODE: Slav Countries. The Birth of Joy in Humility.
