RANDOM THOUGHTS

Hibbert Journal Apologizes.

Three months ago, English-speaking
Jewries and scholars of note were outraged
by a statement in the Ilibbert Journal,
which is recognized as an authoritative
quarterly review of religion, theology and
philosophy, giving credence to the stupid
ritual murder charge. The statement was
then made in a footnote to an article by
Ray Knight of Assam, India, entitled "Bib-
lican Mistranslation." As a result of the
pressure exerted by a certain amount of
public opinion upon the Ilibbert Journal,
its editor, L. P. Jacks, makes the following
withdravail in the current issue of the
-quarterly:
"In a footnote to an article on 'Biblical
Mistranslation' by Mr. Ray Knight in the
July number of the Hibbert Journal, cer-
tain statements appear which give the im-
pression that the charge of ritual murder
brought against the Jews at various periods
Is supported by modern scholarship. The
editor has since corresponded with Mr.
Knight, who withdraws the footnote in the

four years of special training as Lieutenant
Governor, It has been a standing complaint
that politics in this country no seldom enlists
the type of business leader which in other
democracies takes' a prominent share in gov-
ernment. In the case of Mr. Lehman we have
a man of large private means devoting him-
self, at personal sacrifice, to the service of the
community. It is an excellent qucation for
the American people to see for itself that a
banker is not necessarily a maleficent creature
with horns. Ile may be revealed as a man,
like Herbert Lehman, with a passionate interest
in non - banking subjects—public education,
public health, public recreation, the protection
of women and children, the protection of old
age, the care of the mentally afflicted—and
carrying on this work by sound business
methods.
The extraordinary vote which he polled is
both a tribute to him and a sign that the people
know how to appreciate and reward • faithful
and able public servant. It most also be a
great encouragement to young men thinking of
the possibilities of • political career. They
will see in Mr. Lehman's success a crowning
proof that ability and high character and un-
selfish devotion to the public good are sure of
approval by the American people.

In the long run, the Jews fared well in
the last election, both from the point of
view of the number of high positions won by
popular vote as well as from the viewpoint
of the caliber of the men who emerged as
victors. With Bernard Mannes Baruch,
Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Jesse Isidor Straus
and Dr. Felix Frankfurter widely men-
tioned as possible candidates for Presi-

are destined to play an important part in
national politics.
