aids every worthwhile Jewish cause."
Explains Opposition.
"My colleagues and I," he continues, "pointed out the unwisdom
of this conference, more especially now; that it could do no good and
would certainly result in harm; and I made an earnest plea to repre-
sentatives of the Congress who were present to defer their plans for
a world conference indefinitely. This was as late as 11 p. m. on
Thursday night. On Friday night, June 3, as reported in the New
York Times on June 4 and later in the Jewish Daily Bulletin of June
6, this earnest plea for consideration was met by the announcement
of a decision by Dr. S. S. Wise, honorary president of the American
Jewish Congress, who was absent from the previous evening's confer-
ence (though it had been announced that he was expected to be pres-
ent) to entirely disregard the American Jewish Committee," Dr. Adler
asserts.
"I realize," he says, "that the Jews of this country are desirous
of unity of action and I have time and again striven for it. I have
time and again been silent when I should have spoken, hoping by
silence to prevent at least public appearance of disunion. But it
appears to me to be necessary now to make the position of the com-
mittee clear."

Continuing, Dr. Adler's statement declares: "It would seem from
the press releases issued by the American Jewish Congress that the
millions of Jews of Germany, Poland, Rumania and Hungary are per-
fectly helpless and unintelligent people without the legal right or
capacity to protect themselves, and that no occasion must be omitted
for the American Jewish Congress to protest and denounce and dem-
onstrate. These great populations are organized into many splendid
national and local communities with capable and distinguished lead- K

ers, many of whom hold important posts in the legislative and admin-
istrative service of their respective countries. It is common knowl-
edge that nearly all of the responsible Jewish orgganizations of these
countries either ignored or declined the call for the world conference
held in Basle in 1931. This was true also of the leading organizations

Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, is
charged with disrupting Jewish unity in the face of the gravest
emergency in Jewish history in a statement issued Tuesday by the
