shameful. But today we have
such men as David Selznick, Carl
Laemmle, Jr., Irving Thalberg,
and B. P. Schulberg. Strange is
the logic of Miss Wylie for dur-
ing her few weeks of irksome ex-
posure to Hollywood Jews, she
was working in a studio where the
production head was a Gentile.
Surely, there the atmosphere
should not have been too thick for
her artistic flights.
And lest she forget, we would
recall to her the failure some
years ago of a few big film com-
panies which operated under an
anti-Semitic policy. And more
recently, the case of a major
studio (with a ruling of "five
Gentiles to one Jew") which, on
the verge of collapse, called in a
young Jewish executive to save it
from ruin.

which were then widely current
not only in Rome and Greece but
also in Syria and Palestine.
This thesis was highly com-
mended by the members of the
faculty of the philosophy' depart-
ment. It was characterized as a
fine and original piece of work.
The comment of Professor Parker,
the head of the department, was
that its arguments were most con-
clusive and yet moderate in their
claims, and future interpetations
of the sources of Spinoza, he
avers, will have to reckon with it.
Dr. Heller's thesis is of timely
importance in view of the ter-
centenary celebration of Spinoza's
birth to be observed Nov. 24 of
this year.

Shock of A
'nation.
Between the first ballot on May
1, and the second ballot on May 8,
something happened which shook
France and the whole civilized
world, the assassination of the
president of the republic, M, Dou.
mer. Immediately the news of
the assassination became known
in the city and the fact that the
assassin was an alien was an-
nounced, the first thought that
flashed through the minds of the
Jewish inhabitants was "Cod for-
bid that he is a Jew!" That would
have been a terrible thing. The
Jews of Paris walked about for a
time with an agonizing fear in
their hearts. One French daily,
La Liberte, actually wrote in its
special edition that the murderer
was of Jewish origin. When it
came out later that Gorguloff was
no Jew, but a Cossack, and a blat-
ant anti-Semite at that, there was
a sigh.of relief among the Jewish

population. With the mourning
for the president and the detes-
tation of the crime, there was a
feeling that at least we had been
spared the fear of the misdeed of
one Jew being again made the ex-
cuse for inflicting suffering upon
all Jews.
The anxiety shifted to the Rus-
sian colony. It is difficult to de-
scribe the panic that broke out
among the Russian emigres in
Paris. They were actually afraid
of a pogrom against them, The
innumerable Russian shops in
Paris hurriedly closed down. Peo-
ple did not dare to speak Russian
in the streets, to open a Russian
newspaper in public. Any mo-
ment, they thought, there would
be a mob pouring into their haunts
followed by anti-Russian excesses,
at any moment the authroities
might announce restrictions
against Russians, order their de-
portation. Tens of thousands of
Russians living in France suddenly
felt the taste of exile, of fear of a
pogrom.
People Kept Their Heads.
Nothing happened. The French
people kept their heads. They did
not mourn for their president by
wreaking vengeance upon other
innocent people.
That, above all, is the lesson of
the last French elections.
