The seventh subscription concert
ef the season by the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra drew an almost
capacit y audience to Orchestra
Hall, and that by virtue of the
magnetism of the name of Vladimir
Horowitz, Russian pianist extra-
ordinary. Again he chose to present
the brilliantly written, poetically
conceived, and technically dazzling
concerto No. 3 in It minor, Op. 30,
by Rachmaninoff,-the same opus
which introduced Mr. Horowitz to
us some years ago; and of which
opus the composer himself is said
to have obsetved, that this youthful
genius plays it much better than
its author. Than which therecan

be no higher praise. Mr. Horowitz
brought out all the smothered beau-
ties hidden in the lyrical pages of
this great score, and did not hesi-
tate to storm the keyboard when
heroic measures demanded this vir-
tuoso treatment. Never has an audi-
ence been so spontaneous in its ap-
plause than was that which arose
to its feet last night to acclaim the
soloist at the close of this concerti),
so 'hat Mr. Horowitz literally had
the subscribers at his own feet. Of
course he was most ably seconded
by the splendid accompaniment
which Mr. Gabrilowitsch provided,
wile, with the orchestra under his
baton, shared the audience's enthu-
siasm for the pianist's bravura per-
formance. The concert opened with
a rather hazy arrangement of
Bach's famous "Chaconne" by Wil-
helm Middelschulte,111113 included
splendid performance of Eiger' s
celebrated "Enigma Variations."

A neat appearing, clean-cut
young gentleman presented him-
self at the door shortly after the
phone call and introduced him-
self. It appeared that he would
be in Detroit on business for
about a week. The friendly
greeting that was extended to
the stranger by the "Y" mem-

pride by the staff but their pride
hanged to puzzled surprise
when, later in the evening, they
observed the newcomer, and a
boy, who was one of the steady

enly fly into each others' arms
