Dr. Claude G. Monteti,,re, president; the Hon. Lily 11. Montagu,
secretary, and Dr. Israel Mattuck, chairman of the executive commit-
tee, all of London, England, are three of the leaders of the World
Union for Progressive Judaism. The organization has just notified
American members of its governing body of the forthcoming annual
winter meeting to he held on Jan, 18 in London.
The World Union was founded by Dr. :11ontefiore and the Hon.
Miss Montague in 1926. Its aim is to present the teachings of pro-
. gressive Judaism to those Jews who, because they feel out of harmony
with tle Orthodox presentation of Judaism, or for any other reason,
have drifted into a complete indifference. The World Union is com-
posed of nine constituent organizations from America, England,
France, Germany, India and Australia.

largely due to this fact that there
existed an extremely strong anti-
Semitic feeling in Vienna; because
aside from any religious preju-
dices, there were certainly evil-
iknees of much jealousy on the
part of Christians, and particularly
of Catholics. Arguments as to the,
virtues or non-virtues of the Jews
were often the topic of discussion
in our drawing-room, and father
always grew eloquent in defense
of Christ's race, Indeed, so often
were his remarks on this subject
quoted that it was humored at one
time father himself was a Jew,
"About this time he wrote his
article 'Concerning the Jews,' in
which he states he considers them
the most marvelous race the world
ever produced.' Ile used also to
say that the difference between
the intellect -of a Jew and that of
a Christian was about the differ-
ence between a tadpole's intellect,
and an archbishop's. Many of
the talented and cultivated He-
brews were invited to call on us,
inkling much grace of intellect to
every, occasinn."
This reviewer cannot heln but
express regret that more intimate
stories relating to Mark Twain's
attitude to the Jewish people did
not claim a little more space of
this exceedingly interesting vol- ,
ume. It is credited, for instance,1
to Mark Twain that when he was
told that there were, at that time. I
14,000,000 Jews in the world, he
ensued. "What." he exclaimed,
"only 14.000,000! Why. I know I
at least that many myself." A n ..I

Danila Recants, Warns
Against Anti-Semitism

1 Every individual has a very hard
struggle for his existence. When
in addition to this external strug-
gle he has to strive and struggle
i with his own family, he must pus-
I sess almost superhuman strength
' and iron nerves to emerge victori-
ous, or he will be a prey to this
two-fold struggle.
The same is true of a nation.
When it nation is struggling des-
perately to strengthen its position
in the world and is faced by ex-
ternal superior forces that desire
to exterminate it, and in addition
to this eternal struggle it is
troubled by internal dissensions,
and sonic of its members show a
kind disposition to the enemies,
then there must surely be a secret
force in this nation which does flat
let it perish.
This was the condition of the
Jewish people in that epoch of
Chanukah, when Mattathias and
his sons hod to fight the numerous
forces of Antiochus the Wicked.
At the same time they had a des-
perate fight with an internal ene-
my, the Hellenists, who helped
Antiochus in his malicious inten-
tions to make the people of Israel
forget their Torah and their laws.
Mattathias and his sons con-
quered both enemies, and covered
themselves with eternal glory.
What gave them that strength
to conquer? The consciousness
that they were fighting for God's
Torah, which is the symbol of
light and truth. King David said:
"Send forth Thy light and truth
that they may lead me and bring
me to Thy holy mountain, to Thy
dwelling places." Light and
truth possess the power to bring
peace and hanpiness. They always
conquer darkness and deception,
even when those evil forces are a
thousand-fold more. A small can-
dle overcomes with its light the
whole house full of darkness.
The minority conquered the
majority in the Chanukah strug-
gle because light end truth mere
on its side. The Midrash Rabbah
says: "And darkness this svm•
holizes the Greek kingdom that
darkened the eyes of the Hebrews
and told them: Write nn the horn
of the bull that you have no share
in the God of Israel." This horn
is the symbol of brutal force
which was the ideal of the Greek ,
people, and this is what they said
to the Hebrews: "Write on the!
horn of the bull that you have no
shore in the God of. Israel:" in'
other words, give no your ideal of
light and truth and justice, and ac-
cept the horn, symbol of brutal
force. With their evil decrees
they darkened the eves of many
Hebrews not to see the truth, and
they were misled by the glory of
the horn.
On Chanukah we must remem-
ber that the strength of Israel lies
in light, truth and justice, which
ere embodied in nor holy Torah.
The history of Chanukah, the
struggle between the Torah and
the horn of the bull, always re-
peats itself in every generation
and as long as the eves of Israel
will not he darkened and misled
by the glory of the horn, no su-
perior force will conquer it.

service ran obtain connection with
the teletypewriter of any other
subscriber to the vervire within
the same city and this will permit
the immediate transmission of let-
tvnewritten statements or
other information between the two
vuhveribers. In effect. the method
nerd for inter-connection of the
instruments is the some as that
now employed in the telephone
system.
The Present teletypewriter serv-
ice of the Bell system is furnished
only in connection with Private
wires which nre not connected to
central switching points.

—The notorious anti-Semitic

sponsible fur the razing of
many Jewish villages, including
the Borsha outrage,. has de-
nounced his own previous views
and is now openly preaching to
the peasants that anti-Semitism
is poisoning the peasant youth
and the students and is causing
the greatest damage to the en-
tire population, it is learned,
"The entire country and our
Jewish brethren still think that
I organized the Borsha no-
groin," he declared. "But this
is untrue. Neither I nor my
colleague, Berindey, were ever
anti-Semites, and I hope we
'shall
/shall never be."
Jewish population of
Bessarabia is inclined to view
Danila's declaration with sus-
picion. It believes that the
statement is dictated by po-
litical considerations and that
Danila is simply seeking Jewish
votes fur the Nationalist Za-
ranists, whom he has recently
joined.
