ABE MAX
CHIEF RABBI HERTZ'S
BIBLICAL COMMENTARY
His "Pentateuch and Haftorahs"
Boon to English-Speaking
Jews.
"Jews today in English-speaking
countries do not possess for use
in synagogue, school and home
and ealition of the Pentateuch and
I'rophetical Lessons that at the
same time gives the Ilebrew text,
the English translation, and ex-
planatory notes, brief, Jewish and
modern. This work was under-
taken to fill the much-needed
This is the brief explanatory
note appearing on the cover of
"Pentateuch and Ilaftorahs" edit-
ed by Dr. Joseph Herman hertz,
chief rabbi of the British empire.
It is a very modest evaluation of a
very important addition to the
Biblical library to which the lay-
men will now be able to turn for
aid without difficulty, and which
will be a boon to the worshipper
on the Sabbath, as well as to the
every-day Biblical student who de-
sires explanations of texts in
English. The book (83) was pub-
fished by the Oxford University
Press, whose American offices are
at 114 Fifth avenue, New York.
For the English reader, Dr.
Hertz's commentaries will serve
the same purpose that Rashi serves
for the Hebrew reader. Besides,
not only laymen, but Jewish schol-
ars will find the chief rabbi's work
of great value not only for their
explanatory notes and essays, but
also for the many references to
various versions of the Bible and
to authorities and commentators.
As in the first volume, "Gen-
Coin, " the plates of the Letteris
edition of the Hebrew Massoretic
text was loaned by the British and
Foreign Bible Society for use in
"Exodus." Dr. hertz explains in
his prefactory note that the re-
vised version has been used for
the English translation, and that
"where that version offers alterna-
tive renderings, the translation
most in accord with Jewish tradi- '
tion is chosen."
Besides lists of commentators,.
translators and writers on Bible,
subjects, Jewish and non-Jewish.
"Exodus" contains a chronological
table which should similarly be of
great aid to the average reader of
the Bible. Similarly, the cantilla- I
tions of the Torah and the Proph- I
ets and maps and illustrations add,
modern touches to the work and
are certain to arouse greater in-'
terest in the Bible and to increase
knowledge about the Holy Scrip-;
tures. The maps are of the Sinai;
Peninsula and the Wanderings in
the Wilderness and the Holy Land
at the time of the Judges. The
illustrations are of the Candle.'
stick, the Tabernacle, the Ground
Plan of the Tabernacle and the
Ground Plan of Solomon's Tern-1
ple.
The chief rabbi's works are, on'
the whole, of great value and are
indispensable in English-speaking
Jewish homes.
