OUR ANSWER

By WM. R. BLUMENTHAL
Regional Director, United Palestina Appeal.

The year 5689 has been one of exceptional storm
and stress for world Jewry. High hopes of a United
Jewry for Palestine have met with a serious setback
because of events - in Palestine. Never has there been
greater need for fortitude of spirit, never greater de-
mand for loyalty and devotion.
It is too early to appraise fully the consequences
of the sad occurrences in Palestine. But it is un-
thinkable that out of it all great good will not come.
After the storm three rainbows appear ; the heroic
defense of the Jews in Palestine against great odds;
the immediate response to the call for help by Jews
the world over, and especially in this country; the de-
termination to not only preserVe the achievements in
Eretz Yisroel, but to continue building. Even now
one of the most heroic chapters in our history is be-
ing written by the hundreds of undaunted chalutzim
on the way from Europe to Palestine.
Attempt to destroy by violence what the Jewish
people have built for peace has been of no avail. Israel
has overcome even greater difficulties. Surely, this
is not the time for despair, but for renewed efforts
to achieve our historic destiny. Helping Palestine
Jews now to continue building is maintaining our
self-respect as a people. We, in Detroit, will surely
see to it that every available dollar pedged to the
United Palestine Appeal is mobilized for reconstruc-
tive effort in Eretz Yisroel. Let us hope that the New
Year will see great strides made towards a solution
of the problems that beset us.
