Speculation is naturally ripe with
the first concert of each successful

the response which Mr. Kolar elic•'

may be taken as an indication of
what the public can expect when
the various guest-conductors be-

podium, then it might as well be
firmly and clearly understood at
the outset that never has the or-
chestra given so convincing a
proof of pliability, resonance and
superior ability as it did Thursday
night. The violins were exception.

the 'cello did not quite come up to
scratch. But the season has only

will gain strength and courage in
another fortnight and squarely
meet the demands of the ava-
