Ju-t a Step Off Woodward—Across from Hudson's First Subscription Concert by the Detroit Symphony By HERMAN HOEXTER Simplicity and sincerity marked the first concert of the new sea- son of symphonic music at Orch- estra Hall Thursday night, where, in the absence of Ossip Gagrilo- witsch, who is conducting else- where, his associate, Victor Kolar, led the Detroit Symphony through a program that revealed some of the most promising facets of this excellent musical organization, and also won new laurels for thu inspired leadership of Mr. Kolar, Speculation is naturally ripe with the first concert of each successful season as to the merits of the or- chestra as a whole and what changes and improvements have been made in the various choirs. If the response which Mr. Kolar elic•' ited from his men Thursday night may be taken as an indication of what the public can expect when the various guest-conductors be- gin to take their places on this podium, then it might as well be firmly and clearly understood at the outset that never has the or- chestra given so convincing a proof of pliability, resonance and superior ability as it did Thursday night. The violins were exception. ally brilliant, the brass fairly out- did itself, the wood-winds provided sonie of the finest moments of this evening of great music, and only the 'cello did not quite come up to scratch.
