Like a pure white sheet of paper, unstained and
untarnished by the imprints of human hand or en-
gine — thus New Year's Day comes forth from the
womb of Eternity.
Untarnished and unsullied indeed. with a match-
less luster and beauty undestroyed by the long and
heavy trail of human tears, human suffering and
agony, of human guilt and vice that 5%111 soon follow
it and mark it--the New Year smiles yet upon us
Para-
gloriously and innocently with the promise
dise in its eyes—like a babe in the arms of its
mother!
But with its entrance into the world of human
complexities, entanglements of human vicissitudes
and struggles, the New Year—at present It sealed
book to the most penetrating eye—will soon open
itself to the queries of the anxiously throbbing
human heart. Watchman, what of the night, what
of the night? The 365 days to be born in the com-
ing year what do they shelter, what do they hide
in their dark enfoldings and enwrappings? When
the selfsame year that we greet now as a New Year
whose destinies and de:rees are unknown to
us Will have run its course, when it will have passed
with its long line of yet unborn events into the
great ocean of Eternity—when its promises, hopes
and expectations will have become actualities and
fa et e—what will be the record, of the year 5689
which 16.000,000 children of Israel—dispersed
abroad the whole earth—great now with prayerful
hopelit faith—as a stepping stone for humanity on
its uphill march to the Heights of true human cul-
ture and civilisation?
Will the 'New Year—thus the most earnest
souls in Israel ask themselves and the impenetrable
future on this day—advance even with a single
step the Kingdom of God, the Brotherhood of Men.
the mutual understanding and good will among
faiths, races and nationalities! Or will mankind
remain stationary and deadlocked as regards all
the higher and universal interests of mankind?
'Will it be given us to behold nearer the steps of
the Messenger as he advances over the mountains
preaching: "Peace, heralding Salvation: saying
unto Zion: Behold, they God is coming!" Will we
hear in the coming year the rush, rustle and flutter
of the wings of Messiah-or will we see the Genius
of Mankind advancing, conquering unknown realms
in the world of Science, laying the whole of Nature
under its sway with the sole object to bring destruc-
tion and havoc upon children of the sonic Heavenly
Father and fill even the womb of earth with the
marks of violence?"
Pity the man, says the Talmud, who builds the
upper story of his building and forgets to build its
substructure. Pity for the Jew, for the man who
on general grounds and principles is universal in
his sympathies. indulges in dreams of human
brotherhood prays for the arrival of Messianic
times—but who in his own life, where it concerns
his individual welfare or hurt—is 100 per cent
selfish, egotitic and brutal! Woe to the Jew
who would open his heart, even his oratory 100 per
cent for every Jewish cause whether of philan-
thropic or national nature—but, who at the same
time closes his pocketbook, hermetically to the
same cause with the plausible excuse, "Let the next
fellow do it."
Rosh Ilashonah requires of us Righteousness
and Justice in lines of human effort and endeavor.
On the one hand it raises our heart to such sublime
heights of vision where even angel's dread to walk.
It opens to us the vistas of Divine Kingdom, of
Divine Government and Reign of Messianic times,
On the other hand it calls upon us with the vibra-
tions of the Shofar for Repentance in our individual
conduct, for Godliness in our personal life, for
equity and justice in our relations with our fellow-
men.
Let its hear, listen and follow these two-fold
messages of life, light and happiness proceeding
from the heart of our great holiday!

Let us pause for a moment, lay aside our work,
and ponder over things spiritual. Another year
has passed and with Rosh Ilashonah at the thres-
hold, the Jewish people take inventory of the year
just waning. May the deeds of the past year serve
as glistening examples for bettering the approach-
ing year. Let us hope that the new year will have
much in store for the betterment of the Jewish
people everywhere.

tion will control and supervise all
musical instruction as is done to a
great extent in Germany. At pres-
ent, leachers with a thorough gen-
eral education, as well as musical
qualifications. are being sought for
in the school: to teach music. A
private teacher of the highest
calibre cannot take his place in
the •lassroom and do satisfactory
work if he or she has had no class
routine. The future music teacher
must understand class psychology,
its well as music.
"At present, private teachers are
unlicensed and students do not
know where to go for proper in-
struction. The state board of ex-
aminers should take care of this
urgent need.
"Our idea is not to create musi-
cians, but lovers of music because
the average boy or girl will never
take this up as a vocation but only
for his or her own amusement. In
classwork, there is the competitive
and teamwork idea that the aver-
age student misses and that is
partly the reason why so small a
percentage continue the work pri-
vately. The private teacher at-
tempts to develop something that
isn't there instead of only trying
to instill first, the love for wool
music, and then melodies, instead
of dry scales and linger exercies.
"Recently I heard a prominent
New York musician say that she
gave up the violin because it was
a technical instrument. Her teach-
er undoubtedly made it a technical
instrument. The violin was sent
to us to imitate the human voice.
and as such it serves divinely.
"The (lid idea that in order to
teach the violin. one must study
the violin' for several years and
can then go out and teach, is passe.
The teacher today must he a psy-
chologist and a human being, a
disciplinarian and above all, Oil
educated man with ideas."
Mr. Abramovich conducted a six
weeks' course at the New York
University School of Musical Edu-
cation, from July 9 to Aug. 17. Ile
has been re-engaged for the coming
summer.
GOV. GREEN
THANKS VOTERS
"I am each gratified at the ex.

ministration given by the voters
Tuesday," Governor Fred W. Green
said this week as he went vet the
final returns of his r(cord primary
victory.
"It is a renewal of faith to know
so definitely," the governor con-
tinued, "that the people realize
what an effort to put business into
government means to them."
Green made a remarkable record
not only all over the state but in
Wayne county where he defeated
his opponent by a more than two
to one vote.
Undoubtedly in Wayne county
the voters were impressed by the
governor's highway efforts, his
work to "get Detroit citizens out
of the city" on good roads, his
judicial appointments and the rec-
ord of his administration that
