DECRIES INDIFFERENCE OF JEWS
TO THINGS JEWISH

An Unusual Opportunity

5 'Bud's Boys' Make
the "72-Car Club"

The 'Reward of Service

The "72-Car Club" is an honorary club of the Chevro-
let Motor Car Company, accepting only salesmen selling at
least 72 cars during the contract year. That five of "Bud's
Boys" were elected to this organization (Fred Faber being
elected president of the Detroit zone), is a fine tribute to
their popularity and justifies "Bud's" policy of being "Per-
sonally interested to see every customer satisfied and
happy."

A. BENEDICT STRENG, President

CHAS. HAMBURGER, Vice-President
DR. P. M. BERNSTEIN, Secretary-Treasurer

Empire 4035

8510 Twelfth Street at Philadelphia

Making a retrospect of the activities of the year
we find that it has been properly and fittingly
ushered in with the Education Month, in which the
work of the schools has been brought home to every
Jew in Detroit.
This Education Month, which was carried OHL
with nitwit enthusiasm and created a good deal of
sympathy for the work of the schools, led to the
enrollment of many hundreds of additional students.
Among the m a jor achievements of the schools
we must mention the graduation of two classes of
the elementary seven-year-course; the first gradu-
ation of the three-year high school course, and the
erection of the new school in the vicinity of Dexter
boulevard.
We mention here outstanding features only,
because the regular daily )cork of instructing 2,000
children in the study of the Hebrew language, the
prophets, the history, the Talmud, etc., is taken
for granted, as a matter of course.
Now, what are the forces that are behind this
institution of learning known as the United Ilebrew
Schools? Who are the people that actually assist
in the daily task of financing, supervising and man-
aging? Who are they? It is hard to admit the
fact, but a fact it is that the number of people who
are taking an actual and active interest are very
few.
Is it because the rest of the people have so much
faith in the few that they leave it entirely to them,
or is it rather because of indifference or lack of
interest? I fear to say that the latter is the truth.
Our people are indifferent. Even the parents
of those children who learn, and make astonish-
ing progress in their work, even they are indifferent,
apathetic.
It happens very often that when a father is
pressed for an answer for his neglect of his child's
Jewish education, he turns to the boy and says:
"What do you say, Bennie, would you like to go
to 'cheder'?" And if Bennie answers in the nega-
tive, he trimuphantly exclaims, "you see."
Bennie constitutes in his mind an elemental,
irresistible force, not a flexible, impressionable
child.
This indifference (I advisedly call it indiffer-
ence not antagonism) is at the very root of all our
rational evils.
We are indifferent to the work of rebuilding
of Palestine. Are we against it? No, by no means,
no! Aren't we concluding all our meetings and
assemblages with the national hymn "Ilatikvah"?
No, we are not opposing it, but we are indifferent.
We leave it to the official hotly to do the work.
We are indifferent to the sufferings of our
brethren in Eastern Europe, Do we wish our
brethren to perish in want and misery? No. Aren't
we rachmonim b'nai rachmonim? We are just
indifferent. This indifference, this apathy which
is at the core of many of our shortcomings must
be combatted, conquered.
The Education Month with which we are usher-
ing in the New Year is launched, for the purpose of
awakening, of arousing enthusiasm, of instilling
life in the Atzomoth Yeveshoth.
May the coming year he a year of reawakening.
A year in which the indifference and apathy be
changed to deep interest and sympathy.

Pisgah Lodge, occupying as it does one of the
most important places in the communal life of De-
troit, both by virtue of its wide activities and its
large membership, hopes again to contribute its
large share to the welfare of Detroit's Jewish life,
The Order of B'nai B'rith, of which Pisgah
Lodge is a part, embracing as it does every element
in the community, striving as its membership does
for the success of every worthy movement, educa-
tional, social, charitable, etc., makes a wide appeal.
Hardly an individual or a group can fail to respond
to Pisgah's call.
If Pisgah is to offer the best that is within its
powers to the community, the community should
co-operate with it. We expect the affiliated mem-
bers to become more active, and the unaffiliated to
join our ranks. Through co-operation we hope to
. be able to build a very healthy life in our com-
munity. In - conjunction with our fine Ladies' Aux-
iliary and the Junior chapter, Aleph Zadek Aleph,
whom Posgah is proud to sponsor, we can accom-
plish many lofty and worthy things in our com-
munity.
The officers of the lodge are striving hard to
accomplish this aim, and if the members and the
community will join with us in our task, our ac-
complishments will be truly great.
Pisgah's best greetings for the New Year go
forth to the community.

A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY MUST
COME FIRST IN BUILDING A
JEWISH LEADERSHIP

By THEODORE LEVIN

President Shaarey Zedek Men'. Club.

With the unfolding of another year and with
the reflection that it brings, the dearth of leader-
ship in Detroit Jewry, especially among the younger
element, forces itself on the attention of Jews with
some sensitiveness to communal responsibility.
Detroit does not lack young Jews, vital and
aggressive, who could be made eager to add to
Jewish strength and cohesion, but without intelli-
gent and earnest direction young Jews in the midst
of every day activities and distractions must remain
uninterested in and unidentified with Jewish
interests.
To decry lack of leadership is of no avail, even
where there are men willing to lead. Those who
assume responsibility must be qualified as well as
willing to provide the means of training leaders
is obviously the prime step. It is not enough that
matters of Jewish interest are to be developed. A
sense of responsibility, a knowledge of organization
and a consciousness of the need must come first.
An organization of men such as the recently
formed group of Shaarey Zedek, whose aim it is to
better acquaint themselves with things Jewish and
their obligation to themselves as well as to the
community, should bring about a better and hap-
pier communal life.
