NEW FOX IS BEAUTIFUL
THE WAY IS PAVED FOR GREATER
WORK FOR PALESTINE
C
If the United Palestine Appeal in the State of
Michigan from the last New Year to this New Year
had not been successful, there would have been
several very legitimate reasons—a stormy conven-
tion in Atlantic City, a serious business depression
in the city, several resignations in the Zionist or-
ganization 01* America from men whose earnestness
and whose Zionism could not be taken lightly,
Iladas.:ah's serious protest against certain existing
conditions and last, but not least, the real discord
amongst the Zionist factions in the United States
which led to the conditions which prevailed at the
Pittsburgh convention.
And yet, in spite of all these things, the United
Palestine Appeal board of Detroit is happy to be
able to report that this has been tun unusually suc-
resal'ul year both in Detroit and in the several
communities outside of the city, thanks to the de-
voted effort of earnest m:orkers and the generosity
of contributors and to the inherent ideals of the
upbuilding of Palestine, which is stronger than
existing financial conditions and stronger than the
mistakes of Zionism and stronger than the disagree-
ments, however well-founded and well-meaning.
Both during the campaign in Detroit last April
and since that time the amount of cash collected
on this year's pledges has been truly remarkable
and indeed gratifying. It has been proportionately
better than any other year in the history of the
appeals for funds for the restoration of the Home-
land. Reports from Palestine. which were dis-
couraging at the beginning of the yoar, improved
greatly as the year went on. The business crisis
is gone, unemployment is practically stamped out
and conditions for the future are better than at any
time since 1925. The way is now paved for further
immigration of Chalutzim into Palestine.
The U. I'. A. Board wishes its many co-workers
and contributors a Happy New Year, gratefully
acknowledging that, without their help, the suc-
cessful year just ended and the hopeful year now
beginning would not have been possible.

AN AWAKENING OF THE JEWISH
SOUL
By MEYER BECKMAN
President, Congregation Emanuel.
- The New Year and Day of Atonement season
is here. Again we will see the synagogues filled to
capacity. All Jews, whether pious or not, will
observe these two major Jewish holidays. And
why? Because their Jewish soul has a spiritual
awakening and seeks ablution from sins, forgive-
ness and repentance for the wrongs perpetrated
during the year; and they promise the Lord and
themselves that they will be better in the future.
When we look at the people in the synagogue
on those three holy days and see the devotion and
inspiration written on their faces it appears as if
the soul of Israel has awakened and the wish of
God that the Jewish people should be a "Kingdom
of Priests and a Holy people" has certainly been
fulfilled.
Then we ask ourselves: Can Judaism exist
and be everlasting by observing the New Year and
the Day of Atonement and spending three days
out of 365 days in the synagogue? Judaism is an
education which must be kept in the mind and
heart all the year round. When the Jewish people
indulge in physical pleasure and do not take the
time to study and observe the laws and command-
ments given to us on Mount Sinai, Judaism will
naturally suffer.
Why is Judaism so neglected? Why has it
dwindled down to a mere observance of three days
in the year?
By looking back into the history of the Jewish
people we will probably find the answer. We find
that the Jews were the most orthodox and ob-
served their laws and traditions most reverently
when they were oppressed, humiliated and denied
the right to live in accordance with the tenets of
the Jewish law, Then they fought for, suffered
and burned at the stake for the right to observe
their religious teachings in their own way.
Let us hope that the Jewish New Year will
bring an awakening of the Jewish soul not only
for three (lays but for every day in the year and
that the reconstruction and restoration of Pales-
tine will also be a reconstruction and restoration
of the true Jewish Soul. Let us also hope that no
jolt will be necessary to cause that awakening and
that happiness, peace and prosperity shall be with
the Jews over the world for this year and forever.
