URGES ESTABLISHMENT OF JEWISH
HOSPITAL

Rosh Hashonah, the Jewish New Year, marks
another milestone in the passage of time on its way
to eternity. This day is not only one of rejoicing
but also one of awe and dread, for it is Yom Hazi-
koron, the day of Remembrance. We pause in the
midst of our daily activities to take reckoning of
our moral and spiritual assets and liabilities so that
a proper balance may be struck. Nor is it mere
chance that the element cif fear enters into the at-
mosphere of the occasion. In the service we prey
"0 Lord, frighten us."
Despite our so-called civilization, man at heart
is but an animal whose natural desires and instincts
are curbed through fear. The weird, shrill blast
of the Shofar is not a musical note, but rather a
signal in time of distress. It is not unlike the
shriek in the wilderness or the SOS flashed at sea
in time of peril. It startles us, frightens us. rouses
our dormant spiritual forces so that we may be
saved from the waves of materialism, greed, and
selfishness, which threaten to overwhelm us.
In our desire at this time to uplift the down-
trodden, to help the poor, to heal the sick, it occurs
to me, no greater good could be accomplished than
the establishment of a Jewish hospital in this busy
metropolis. There is no ouestion of its need and it
only remains for those in authority to rise to the
occasion, to respond to the call of our people. May
such efforts be crowned With success. May the
Almighty grant you a Happy and Prosperous New
Year.

A host of friends is mourning
the recent death of Mrs. Henrietta
Betonan Wineman.
Mrs. Wineman, widow of Leo-
pold Wineman, founder of the
People's Outfitting Co., died Sept.
1, at the age of 70, otter an illness
of three (lays. Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, from her
late residence, 308 Kirby avenue.
Burial was at • Woodin•re Ceme-
tery.
Born in Cincinnati Aug. 14,
1853, she came to Detroit in 18P3
when her husband established the
People's Outfitting Co. She con-
tributed generously to the North
End Clinic and to many Jewish
charities.
Mrs. Wineman was a member of
the Temple Beth El and belonged
I to the Women's City Club, the
Twentieth Century Club and the
Council of Jewish Women. She
leaves two daughters, Mrs. Arthur
Victor of New York and Mrs.
harry Farbstein I if Buffalo; and
two sons, Henry and :Andre•
Wineman of Detroit.

"The Baby Cyclone" Next
Attraction at the Detroit
Civic Theater.

By special arrangement with
George M. Cohan, Miss Bonstelle
presents Grant Mitchell in Mr.
Cohan's laughing farce, - The Baby
Cyclone," opening Monday night,
Sept 17, at the Detroit Civic thea-
ter. Mr. Mitchell is the first guest
star this season of the Civic thea-
ter, and will appear in the role
which he created last season in
New York at the Miller theater, as
Joseph Meadows. It is quite a
triumph to have secprid him for
this part. Vera Allen, Miriam
Sears, and Craig '.Ward will appear
in important roles, and George
Blackwood will have a splendid
comedy character role, which will
enable him to show a side of his
acting which he has not had an
opportunity to do sines( early last
season.
The characters are all
distinctive and interesting, even to
the "bits," so that the .::tire cast
has an excellent opportunity in
this deliciously laughable comedy.
Joseph Meadows is a peace-lov-
ing bachelor, engaged to a charm-
ing young woman, and utterly inno-
cent of a desire for adventure. Ile
rescues another woman from a
supposed tormentor, only to find
himself involved in a family
quarrel, which nearly costs him his
own happiness. One gorgeously
funny episode follows another,
until the entire play is a roll of
laughter. This is one of the best
farce-comedies New York has seen
for a long time, which was proved
by its year's run and its continue
ous popularity—it is a laugh-riot.

An old saying, found in the Talmud and the
Midrash. has it that Satan. who through the whole
year slanders and maligns Israel before God accus-
ing him of all manner of crime against the Lord
must desist from his hateful actions on two days of
the year and must remain silent. These two (lays
are Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur.
Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur are indeed
venerable and trustworthy witnesses of our good
faith for they have accompanied us through thou-
sands of years and, loyal and faithful, they have
been our good angels through struggles and storms,
on blessed plains and through desert wastes. In
times of stress, they offered us comfort, and when-
ever the burden of destiny pressed hard, they were
ever ready to lessen the load.
They observed with careful eye the Jew's
faith and trust in his God and with watchful care
they beetled the Jew's love of his Torah. They
marked how this love for the Torah was the center
for all his desires and wishes, how that when he
prays for life with the plea "Sochrainu lechayim,"
he does not ask for the ordinary comforts of life
and the pleasing gratification of his senses but
rather he exclaims, "Melech chofaitz bechayim,"
that sort of life that is delightful to the Lord. The
cry is "Lemaancho Elohim Chayim" the sort of
life that is gratifying to God and pleasing to Him.
The Jew does not pray for himself alone but for
all of his people together. Therefore he prays in
the plural, "Sochrainu Lechayint," he prays for all
his brethren and all his people, ''Remember us 0
Lord to life, that our nation may remain to fulfill
our mission on earth." He prays first for life as an
individual. But there is more in "Sochrainu
Lechayim." Ile prays that the whole nation as a
totality may survive and flourish. As they defied
death and all its agonies in times gone by, so may
the whole nation of Israel continue to defy its
enemies and to go on carrying forward the flag of
its holy religion and Torah. "Lemaancho elohim
chayim."
If Satan should dare to abuse Israel and to
malign it as a people full of wickedness and fault,
these faithful witnesses Rosh Hashonah and Yom
Kippur would testify in their defense, for they are
authentic witnesses called forth from the pro-
fundity of Israel's life and suffering.
Should the Satan of modern times, our enemies
who lift their voices in abuse and excoriation, dare
to accuse us, these faithful defendants who are still
with us as they have been for thousands of years
will call aloud, "Be sib:AL-you nations of the world.
Before you accuse Israel, remember that you have
a long way to travel before you arrive at that re-
ligious peak where Israel stood thousands of years
ago. that great labor is demanded of you before
you can reach the pinnacle of enlightenment and
virtue whereon Israel mounted thousands of years
ago.
In the lofty tone of Israel's prayers, there is no
desire to see ill befall even the worst and most
criminal of his enemies. His prayer is ever,
"Mloch al kol hooretz bichvodenu vayheenose al
koll hooretz bikoorenu." "Reign thou in thy
glory over th'e whole universe, shine forth in thy
splendor over the inhabitants of the world." Our
sages invoked the blessing of the Lord on all of
mankind. This universal kindness and well-wish-
ing is the keynote of all Jewish prayers. The Jew
never prays that his enemies shall perish even when
he is suffering from their cruelest and most in-
human tortures. His prayer is only that "their
wickedness may perish and be destroyed."
The Jew has no desire to dominate this world.
He prays only for the era prophesied by Isaiah
when peace shall reign and "Oomale hooretz deo,"
when intellectual and spiritual endeavor shall be
universal. Such a prayer lifts the Jew up to
higher and nobler thoughts and feelings, to a better
and broader living.
