and hope, comes into being. May the
New Year bring to my friends and

THE CALL OF THE SHOFAR

Rush liashonah, the beginning of the year, marks
the end of summer and the approach at winter. It is
the time when nature loses its gay mood and assumes
it more solemn tin.. When the leaves begin to fall and
the flowers to wither, man's thoughts turn from his
daily routine to meditate upon this change of seasons,
the passing of nature from a state of ceaseless activity
into a state of quiescence, of death-like slumber. It
recalls to hint the facts of his own existence. It re-
minds him that he is an infinitesimal part of a vast uni-
verse; that he, too, must some day pass into a state
of rest.
Yom Hazikoron, the day of reckoning, is truly a
day filled with awe and dread. The shrill blasts of the
Shofar, the ram's horn, stir up our sluggish conscience.
quicken the soul, and fires the spirit. According to the
Talmud, the Shofar is the symbol of sacrifice. It re-
calls the attempt of Abraham to sacrifice his beloved
son Isaac upon the altar to prove his faith in God. An
angel stayed his hand. and a rain was sacrificed in
Isaac's stead.
Then followed the deep slumber during SODA the
future of Israel was revealed. The sheep is an inno-
cent, defenseless, peace-loving animal, contributing
greatly to the comfort of man and requiring but little
in return. This is the spirit of sacrifice and is symbol-
ized in the Shofar.
In these days of materialism, greed, selfishness, it
is time to blow the Shofar and rally our spiritual
forces. Whither are we going? The undermining of
our moral fabric must cease. The notes cannot go
unheeded. We must respond to its challenge, to live
the full life of the Jew—to do justice, to love mercy,
to walk humbly before God.

(6rrettitgli

May the year 5688 be eventful in the annals of
our people and may it bring added luster and
greater achievement to t he descendants of Israel.

,

It is again my pleasure to send a message to the
Jewish people through the graciousness of The De-
troit Jewish Chronicle on the anniversary of Rosh
Ilashonah and Yom Kippur.
Every day throughout the year we see great ad-
% ancement of the Jewish race in commerce, literature
and art. through which we are having day by day
greater evidences of the nation's appreciation. Every
day we are seeing evidences of greater toleration of
the different races and the differnt religions and to
the Jewish people I desire to extend my congratula-
tions upon their progress and the greater understand-
ing of the American people of the value of the Jewish
race to our welfare.
