In the midst of the services on the New Year, when
every Jewish soul is deep in meditation and prayer,
come the piercing strains of the Shofar sounding
throughout the synagogue. It is not it pleasant sound.
It is not intended to rejoice the soul with its swerit
music and its charming lyrics. It is not made to enter-
tain the praying Jews as they confess their sins to
their Maker. Still it is an instrument of the highest
significance and importance to the Jewish people. The
call of the Shofar may be translated in the one word,
"Remember!"
At times it is good to forget. If man would remem-
ber his misfortunes eternally, his life would be one
long stretch of bitterness and anguish. But the loving
Creator in His mercifulness has endowed man with
the ability to forget so that time dulls the edge of his
agony and he can know peace and happiness once
more. A gift that is divinely given should not be
turned against the giver and the gift of forgetfulness
should not be employed to forget all that is owing to
the Creator.
It is related that once a business man who was
sorely pressed by his creditors sought out a friend and
asked his advice. The friend agreed to offer hint a
solution for a fee and when the fee was agreed upon,
he gave him the following advice:
"When any of your creditors talk with you, behave
like a madman. Shout and scream and behave as
though you were insane. Your creditors will see that
they can gain nothing from you and they will leave
you in peace."
The man acted upon the advice of his friend to
such good effect that soon he was rid of all his cred-
itors. When the friend came for his fee, he was served
in the same manner. The man behaved as though he
was insane and the friend could obtain nothing. One
must not behave in this manner to his God who gives
the gift of forgetfulness but demands that the man
shall remember certain things.
In his constant pursuit of a livelihood, man some-
times forgets the finer things of life. In his efforts to
satisfy his bodily wants, he forgets that he is endowed
with a soul that craves satisfaction and has certain
demands of its own. He forgets his ennobling duties.
to God and man. Something is needed to pierce this
veil of forgetfulness and stay its dragging effects.
Such a thing for the Jew is the significance of the
Jew.
This is the call of the Shofar, which the Torah calls
"Sichron Truaw"—the sound of remembering. The
language of the Shofar translated is this:
"People! A new year is coming! In the course of
this year, you may and you will forget many things.
But remember your duties to God and your own soul.
Remember the traditions of the Jewish people and
remember the day of judgment. Remember to keep
your children loyal Jews. Remember to instill in your
homes the true Jewish spirit. And all through the
year let the sound of the Shofar ring in your ear with
one word, Remember!
So let this New Year be one of good resolution.
Let us reset the lamp of Judaism, re-kindle the flame
that is symbolic of the spirit of righteousness. May
the sacred light be kept burning by the fuel of our
soul's fire, pure as the spirit of life, and may it remain
unquenchable through the long years of earthly toil
and sorrow and when the shadowy evening of the past
year is again at hand, may we be found to have per-
formed our share toward the rebuilding of a new
Israel in the Holy Land.

Education Month
High Holiday Sermons Will
Launch Propaganda for
Education.
Education month will be inaug-
urated in Detroit with the coming
of the high holidays.
As its name implies, Education
month will be devoted to the cause
of Jewish education among the
youth of our community. Many
conservative and orthodox rabbis
have been interviewed by the Tal-
mud Torah committee consisting of
J. Friedberg, vice-president of the
board of the United Hebrew
schools, and H. Goldman, and with-
out exception they have agreed to
devote one sermon to the problem
of Jewish education.
In many synagogues of the city
during the high holidays the serv-
ices will include a sermon on the
subject of Education month and its
meaning to Detroit Jewry.
Among those who will address
congregations un this subie•t are
I. Rosenberg, principal of Kirby
Center, and D. Marks-n, one of
the head teachers of the United
Hebrew schools. Both will deliver
addresses at the Philadelphia-By-
ron Talmud Torah. Mr. Rosenberg
will also speak at Congregations
Emanuel and hlishkan Israel, while
Mr. Marks- n will deliver one ser-
mon at the Beth David synagogue.
