Editor's Note:—For the benefit of those who desire a trans-
literation of the prayer recited by mourners and who are not
familiar with Ilebrew, The Detroit Jewish Chronicle publishes
the prayer in English terms arranged according to syllables.
Paragraph four is recited in Reform synagogues only, and not
in Orthodox or Conservative synagogues. In Reform syna-

Review of the Jezcivb Year -
5687
By JOSEPH SALMARK.
Jewish history continuos to be
made by adverse circumstances. A
group of holligans sweep through
Rumania, and at once the Jews of I
that unfortunate country become
thu cynosure of the world's eyes.
Russia imprisons Zionists and bars
the use of the Hebrew language,
and the news is filled with Jewish
conditions in the Soviet state. Eng-
land sees the establishment of
new organization, called "The
White Knights," based on the same
principles as the American Ku
Klux Klan, and articles are written
in anti-Semitism in Great Britain.
Norway agitates for a prohibition
If the Jewish method of slaughter-
ing, shechita, and the orthodox
world is aroused by the anti-Jewish
attitude of the northern country.
There is one single, outstanding
event of the past year, 5687, which
derived its importance and which
secured tremendous publicity not
because it was fill act of anti-Semit-
ism, but because it was a refuta-
tion of that prejudice. Henry
Ford's public recantation, with the
declaration that the vitriolic ar-
ticles which had been appearing in
the Dearborn Independent for the
past eight years were published
without his knowledge and con-
sent, may properly be considered
the most significant occurrence in
the Jewish world of the past twelve
months. His net of apology had
its importance not alone for the
Jews of America, who were not
vitally harmed by what Ford's pub-
lication had been saying, but for
the Jews throughout the world, in
those countries in which "The In-
ternational Jew" had been circulat-
ing, and where great capital was
made by the anti-Semites of the
partnership with a scan of the
wealth and fame of Henry Ford.
To say that 5687 has marked a
new epoch in the life of Jewry
would merely he attempting to give
a spurious importance to this re-
view of the Jewish year. There
are, however, several events which,
mined to a few incidents of recent
years, add to that slow but steady
suceession of time which makes for
history.
American Jews continue to give
large sums to the advancement of
the arts and sciences. Outstanding
among these gifts was the estab-
lishment of the $3,000,000 Daniel
Guggenheim Foundation for the
Promotion of Aeronautics. This
fund is designed to aid the advance-
ment of aircraft by the establish-
ment of research laboratories in
universities and the chartering Of
snecial expeditions. The most
popular, probably, of the activities
of the Guggenheim Foundation for
the past year was its subsidizing of
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh, the
trans-Atlantic flyer, in having him
make a transcontinental tour un
behalf of the promotion of interest
in aviation.
Bernstein, who also had a libel sui
scheduled against the automobile
manufacturer, with Samuel Unter
(flyer to press his case. This suit
too, was closed with an apolog
cud a settlement. Henry Ford'.
statement that he never had any
thing against the Jews, and that h
never personally wished to express
any animosity may be regarded as
one of the important milestones in
Americanhistory, iiiasmuch as it
eliminated one of the greatest fac-
tors in the stimulation of anti-
Jewish feeling.
Although not of any communal
Jewish interest, it may be noted
that Charles A. Levine added to the
prestige of American Jewry by be-
ing the first Jewish passenger, or
for that matter the first passenger
of any race, to cross the Atlantic
in an airplane. ilia feat may, in
later years, be regarded by his-
torians in the same light as Jews
today think Of Luis de Sant:Inge',
of thristopher Columbus' party to
America.
Of more than passing interest
as regards the interrelationship
Pet wren the diverse elements in
American Jewry was the compact
entered into by Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann, on lx•half of Zionists, with
Louis Marshall, representing the
non-Zionists, for the formation of
a Joint Palestine Survey Commis-
'ion delegated to make a thorough
investigation of conditions in Pal-
estine. On the basis of this report
non-Zionists will be ready to give
their moral and financial support
to the economic rebuilding of Pal-
estine. This compact marks an im-
portant point in Jewish history,
inasmuch as it bridges the chasm
that has existed between those
Jews who have held that Palestine
as a Jewish Homeland can only
mean the political instability of
Jews wherever they are, and that
section of Jewry which regards
Palestine as the only solution of
the Jewish problem. For years
American Jewry was divided on
the great problem of forms of re-
ligion. Orthodox was pitted against
liberal. That demarcation is slow-
ly disappearing. With the erasure
of the line between Zionists and
non-Zionists it is evident that
American Jewry has taken a long
stride toward unification and har-
mony.

Though there were a great many
items of Jewish interest during the
past year, in the nature of appoint-
ments of Jews to places of honor,
and the participation of Jews in
general communal affairs, the in-
trinsically Jewish event of import-
ance was the trial in Detroit of the
Aaron Sapiro libel ease against
Henry Ford. The names involved
in this suit were of international
importance, and thus gave the trial
an international notoriety in addi-
tion to the interest of the Jewish
angle of the affair. It is generally
believed that when • mistrial was
declared, Aaron Sapim had almost
won his case. At any rate, Henry
Ford's later apology and settle-
ment for the sum of $110,000 con.
eluded the 51.005.000 libel suit with
the finest sweep of any libel suit in
