MOTHERHOOD

When a married woman without
offspring expatiates On the ingrati-
tude of children by way of pretend-
ing to comfort herself for her lack
of them she betrays that she didn't
want them and perhaps evaded
motherhood. Motherhood is normal,
natural and desirable to norm!
women. When, as sometimes hap-
pens, a woman cannot hear she usu-
ally speaks of it with regret. She
senses that she has really lost
something worth while.
The woman who consoles her
childlessness on the basis of the
unworthiness of children usually
confesses to her own selfishness.
Be wary of her. If you do not she
is likely to make you weary.—The
Supplement.

-

Among the blessings devoutly to be wished for at
this season of the year, let us include a fuller realiza-
tion of the duties we owe our fellow-Jews the world
over and a keener appreciation of the spiritual power
and moral energy inherent in American Israel.
There seems, alas! to be no uplifting of the dark
cloud which has so long shrouded our brethren in east-
ern Europe. Our work in their behalf must be con-
tinued with renewed vigor and increased zeal. Nor
dare we lose sight of the streluous, aye, desperate,
effort put forth by them to revive their spiritual life,
as evidenced by their anxiety to maintain their schools
and Talmudic academies—an effort which should
evoke our admiration and stimulate us to give them
our whole-hearted support.
Moreover, American Jewry is the hope of the Jew-
ish homeland. What will be done in Palestine will be
largely determined by what American Jews will do
('or Palestine. A unique opportunity is thus afforded
Its. We dare not neglect it.
But the duties we owe Israel abroad, onerous and
exacting though they be, do not exempt us from the
responsibility lying nearer home. "Drives" and "cam-
paigns" are no substitutes for the Jewish life. There is
a vast fund of Jewish sentiment resident in American
Israel. Our spiritual resources have not been explored
yet. If we are worthily to celebrate the coming days
of awe and solemnity, we must resolve to dedicate
ourselves to the supreme task of releasing our spiritual
powers and possibilities.
May the year 5688 help us realize this two-fold
task.

A YEAR OF PROMISE

By RABBI LEON FRAM

The New Year of 5688 opens with an unprece-
dented promise of happiness for world Jewry. They
who for the last seven years have been slandering us
in the ear of our mankind have confessed their error
and their guilt and have asked for forgiveness. On this
Day of Atonement Israel's God of justice and mercy
will grant atonement not only for the sincerely re-
pentant of Israel, but also for the sincerely repentant
of those who have maligned Israel.
American Jewry has reason to greet this New Year
with a sense of pride in its achievements of the past
year. Through the generosity of American Jewry our
brethren of Poland have been relieved of hunger, our
brethren of Russia have been restored to our people's
ancient occupation of agriculture, and our brethren in
Palestine are being led safely through a severe crisis.
I venture to predict that the most significant activ-
ity of Apeman Jewry in the coming year and years
will be in the field of Jewish education. American
Jewry knows the danger of prosperity. It knows that
in the ease and comfort which prosperity brings, the
noble ideals which were generated by adversity may
be forgotten. But the ideals which were borne of the
throes of Jewish suffering are too precious to be lost.
They are things of use and beauty which neither Jewry
nor mankind can spare. Therefore, American Jewry
will take care to teach its children the epic story of
the Jew, in order that the children of the happy to-
morrow may be enriched by the sweet legacy of the
bitter past. I should like this to be in the mind of every
Jew as he celebrates the New Year of 5688. that the
finest fruit of his New Year worship will be his active
interest during the coming year in the cause of Jewish
education.
