Two distinct formulas represent the %rording and
We arc approaching the "Yomim Ilanoroitn," the
phrasing of New Year greetings: one of which, "Le
Shonoh Torah Tikosevo," is the Jewish New Year's
greeting as extended to each other by the children of
the immortalpeople at the eve of our great Rosh
Ilashonah feast ; the other, "A happy New Year," is
the adopted formula of felicitation as exchanged at
the threshold of the civil new year.
The difference between these two formulas of
greeting goes deeper than • mere exchange in literary
style and phraseology. Studying with psychological
insight and earnest thoughtfulness, it is not hard to
trace beneath the respective phraseologies of both
greetings two totally different conceptions of human
happiness, of the ways and means to achieve it, and
of the art of transforming personal happiness into
blessedness for larger circles and groups of men.
"Happy New Year" is the wish Jews and Gentiles
extend to each other and their fellowmen at the mid-
night hour of the clear starlit snow-covered winter
night. when the stroke of the twelfth hour ushers in
a new civil year. The proposition is in general a shal-
low one, without height and depth, without philosophy
or poetry, without an attempt to understand and com-
prehend of what happiness consists. No reference is
made in the Nett Year greeting to bringing human
happiness in organic contact with the spiritual, ethical
and physical qualities of man. No venture is made to
view happiness as the climax and final sum of human
effort and endeavor directed toward perfection and
unfolding of all the inate powers of man. Ilappy New
Year! Happiness grows and ripens, falls in the laps
of man by some good fortune without drawing its
substance and nourishment from root, branch or tree.
Like meteor-stone resplendent in fiery luster and
beauty it illuminates the distant horizon and falls into
the portion of the happy son of fortune without spir-
itual preparation and toilsome effort on his part.
How different is the conception of happiness and
the means to attain it which the Jew expresses in his
New Year's greeting for happiness. "Le Shonoh Torah
Tikosevo." "Be.written up for a good year." The eery
phraseology of the words makes tutyay with the notion
:v if happiness would but be a casualty upon which the
human wayfarer happens to strike. The metaphor
"Ile written," indicates and suggests human toil and
effort as primary conditions to attain happiness. Writ-
ing and book are the emblems of concerted human
effort of the noblest product of men. Happiness is not
the gift of a midsummer night dream by a fairy but is
the final sum of man's spiritual. ethical and physical
qualities. There is no happiness but it be attained with
painstaking effort. purposeful toil and with the illum-
ination of the human soul believing in happiness and
carrying the ideal of blessedness. From above comes
the blessing upon our enterprises and undertakings,
but the foundation and substructure to it must be laid
by far-sighted human activity.
Lessing, the great German humanist and poet,
stated once that if the Superior Being would offer him
once the choice between two gifts: one of them con-
sisting of wisdom perfectly matured and •ll-made,
the other again of wisdom immature but slowly un-
folding itself to truth by the labor and observation of
man, he would rather choose the second gift, paying
for truth a golden price in work and study. Something
of this spirit holds true in regard to the conception
of happiness of the Jew. Given the choice between
happiness granted hint without toil and effort on his
part and happiness which is the result of God's bless-
ing and man's toil :Old labor, vision and understand-
ing. the Jews VOUId certainly select the second gift.
One remark more—according to the Jewish con-
ception even the fact that man acquired happiness
does not sullice. Happiness must not only be acquired
but also deserved. Man must be worthy of happiness
if it is to operate as the most beneficial power in his
life. We deserve happiness if we share it with our fel-
lowmen, if we rejoice and make the heart of our fel-
lowman rejoice. if we give from the Divine Blessing
to the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, the widow,
the aged—if baking under the sun-rays of happiness
we call forth of our nature file best. the noblest in it :
the qualities that shine like pure gold and make us to
a "Jew." A pride of God! Israel Becho Espoar!
Let me with loving heart wish to my friends, to
Detroit Jewry and to Israel at large not only a "Happy
New Year" but a well deserved, well earned happi-
ness in the new year which shall inscribe our name in
the book of God's friends, that the blessing shall be-
come true: "Le Shonoh Torah Tikosevo."
awe-inspiring • days of Rosh Hashonah and its subse-
quent days of penitence, the crowning climax of
which is the Day of Atonement.; a season that per-
meates the Israelite with reverential fear and solemn
emotion. These days are welcomed guests that visit
the Jew regularly at this period to refresh his spirit
and to call 'forth within him rejuvenated energy; to
equip him with courage and tenacity so that he may
continue his historic march with unfaltered steps until
the dawn of the ultimate glorious epoch of universal
freedom and justice.
It is a fact worthy of note that the Israelite does
not celebrate his New Year in the month of Nisan,
the period of his liberation from Egypt and his na-
tional birthday! It is not in the make-up of his nature
to be out egotistic and narrow-minded as to think solely
of himself and to ignore the rest of mankind. He com-
mences the first day of the year in the month of Tishri ;
the traditional birthday of all men, all races and
creeds; children of the first nun created by God, \•ho
are to be united in a common brotherhood.
Highly poetical is that passage in the Midiash that
•
when the first man \vas created
and the angels on
high beheld the composite creature; the erect figure,
the high forehead, the perfectly molded features, the
mirror-like eyes and above all, when the' fathomed
the holy depths of his great soul with all the purity
and virtue that dwelled therein, added thereto the
gift of speech—then the angels were amazed and be-
wildered and in their ecstasy they greeted him with
the exclamation "Holy! Holy! Holy!" an epithet at-
tributed to God himself. But no sooner did Adam sink
into a lethargy, when the angels became convinced
that he is no more than an ordinary mortal; nothing
but flesh and blood with low instincts and brutal in-
clinations as all other creatures, since the man within
him is fast asleep.
Therein lies t h e great significance and essence of
the high holy days. We have explicit faith in the orig-
inal glory of man, God's most ■ wonderful creature; we
place unqualified confidence in mankind. The world
is good and beautiful; all children of men originate
from the purest and divinest source, children of one
Father, members of one family—but lamentably their
inner humanitarian faculties are slumbering while
their lives are engulfed in everyday materialism.
No wonder, then, that in such a state of coma the
animal within the maw takes advantage of him and
works chaotically with all its bestial instincts un-
bridled and uncontrolled.
Therefore, on New Year's day, man's birthday,
the Israelite, in unison with till his brethren the world
over, prays heartily that till races, nations and creeds
"May form one band to do Thy will with a perfect
heart." May they all awaken from their long, dan-
gerous sleeping sickness. May soon come the time
when the beastly nature will sink in all everlasting
sleep "and all wickedness shall be totally obliterated
like smoke."
On this Rosh Ilashonah that ushers in the year
51;88. our most fervent prayers ascend on high to our
Heavenly Father that during its reign Israel may be
instrumental in shedding luster upon our ancient faith,
upon the land of Israel, upon this land of liberty, and
work peace and blessing among all men and nations
on earth, that out of the homes of the rich and the
poor, from the hands and lips of the living and from
the memories of the dead, one great anthem of praise
and thanksgiving, of joy and gladness, ratty arise.
May the ensuing year bring about a revival and
complete awakening of the original God-like ideals
within man out that the angelic chorus may again be
induced to call hint "Holy" and perfect as on the day
he emerged from the hands of his Creator.

SEASON'S GREETINGS
In placing a Station-to-Station call,
if you do not know the number, say to
the Long Distance Operator, for instance,
"I want Mr. John Smith's residence,
250 Sayre Street, Lansing, Michigan."
Be sure that you do not specify to the
operator that she call any particular
person. A call placed for a particular
person is known as a Person-to-
Person call, and costs more than a
Station-to-Station call.

You can experience the pleasure of
talking regularly with the son or daugh-
ter attending school, although they are
far away. Establish a certain night of
the week as Telephone Home Night,
where they can place a call for the home
telephone number.
Such a call is known as a Station-to-
Station call, and costs appreciably less
than a call placed for a Particular Per-
son. It is the kind of call to make
when you are reasonably certain the
person to whom you wish to talk will
answer the telephone or can be called
to it quickly.
